Forums - Sales - Question about PS3 sales.

I was browsing through game sales and noticed that many of the mainstream titles like Madden, GTA, Fight Night, NBA Live/2k8, Call of Duty, ect are currently selling better on 360 than PS3. I was wondering how many PS3 will need to be sold to see game sales numbers even out or perhaps tilt towards PS3? I think this generation's sales numbers are really deceptive with the Wii doing its thing, PS3 acting as both Sony's Blu-Ray head and console, and 360 aimed directly at gamers. Most 360s sold are straight up for gaming because people already have DVD players and iTunes and what not for DLC, but PS3 owners are a lot more ambiguous.

I know a bunch of people that just want it for a Blu-Ray player, but I know there are plenty that bought one because they thought it would provide the "absolute" next gen/current gen/whatever gen experience. Anyways I'm just a little curious how you think each companies different strategies will play out and how third party devs will react as this generation continues. Personally I feel that PS3 sales will need to be about 3-4 million more than 360 worldwide before multi-plat game sales actually shift in favor of PS3, but maybe that's just me o_o I dunno.

Well, I would say about even, but the 360 fanbase seems to be pretty big in terms of software purchases, and some PS3's are more or less only used for Blu-Ray. So I would say PS3 would have to have about a million more to even out on everything.

That being said, some games have just plain sold better on PS3 in spite of the user base difference, like Devil May Cry 4 for instance.

Games like Madden would definitely sell better on the 360 than on the PS3 with equal userbases, although the Xbox demographic has definitely diversified compared to last gen.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

This generation will always be lopsided. In Europe, the PS3 will eventually have a big lead over the 360, so expect football titles to do better for it.

In America, the 360 will always have a lead, so expect madden and basketball games to sell more on that console

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Any game that sells better in NA than anywhere else will be heavily in the 360's favor. Mainly do to userbase.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

correction, its all about userbase. As i read above, maybe DMC4 sold better on PS3 because of Japan mostly PS3 > 360? Sony should of stepped it up with JRPGs this generation, they loosing the asian hemisphere

I think that when the PS3 catches the 360 in overall sales (probably by March of next year) this will even out with a probable shift towards Sony (due to people with both consoles). This will be intensified by the release of trophies (FINALLY!!) that match the incentive achievements give for a 360 purchase. I would even contend that trophies are superior in that there is no early adopter head start. If you buy a PS3 today and a 360 today you start tens of thousands of gamer points behind any serious players on the 360 but almost exactly even with the PS3 community. Also I greatly prefer the leveling up system to the system of meaningless points with the 360. When I was barely short of level two I really worked for a gold trophy in super stardust while on the 360 what does another 20 gamerpoints really mean when you have 5000?

I also think that more and more developers are using to use the multiple cores better instead of treating the PS3 as a poor imitation of the 360 (which is what it is when you ONLY use the central processor and ignore the rest of the architecture). The PS3 is vastly more powerful, but only if used correctly. More and more devs finally seem to be rising to that challenge (and I think MGS4 will only intensify that by showing just what is possible if the power is utilized).

I would guess major releases with an even installed base in Europe and the US would be 60/40 in favor of the PS3. Not paying for online is a major factor too. I wouldn't even think of getting something like Call of Duty for the Xbox since I have no interest in shelling out 50 dollars a year for nothing.

SONY will eventually pretty much own 360 in Europe. NA will take alot of work and effort, no need to say anything about Japan, and later one the "others" catagory will mainly lean towards PS3 over 360, atleast that's how I see. One things for sure, Nintendo is kicking ass....

True, even though I'm from America...

I think that once PS3 overtakes 360 in "Others" then software sales will slowly shift in favor of the PS3 except for the big sports titles (FIFA is and PES are exceptions since soccer is more popular outside of America). Also I think that Japan will start to pick up whenever FFXIII releases and when hopefully Sony's Japan studios put out a few titles, but they will probably never reach Nintendo in Japan.
