Forums - PC Discussion - Games for Windows – LIVE Goes Free

Microsoft announced today that Games for Windows – Live, the online multiplayer gaming service for Windows that connects Windows gamers to the Xbox LIVE community, is now completely free. Below is the new description for the service:

Free multiplayer is just the beginning.

Introducing Games for Windows – LIVE, the free gaming service built for Windows that makes great Windows games even better. With Games for Windows – LIVE, you get an online identity – called a gamertag – and a friends list that works across multiple games, the XBOX 360, and even the Zune music service. You can easily find and communicate with your friends online with text and voice chat. Earn achievements and Gamerscore that lets you track and compare your accomplishments.

Play multiplayer games with your friends, or play against new opponents online using our exclusive TrueSkill™ matchmaking system – with other Windows® players or with or against XBOX 360 players (in supported games.)

All of this is possible today – and at no charge.

Not like they had a choice. No one was buying it. The magazine went out of business in like 6 months. It was a hilariously huge flop.

If they didn't still offer half the services of Steam I would care, but as it stands, there is no reason to ever use Games for Windows Live.

They should've done this sooner. Steam is the home for PC gamers now, and I doubt many will even bother to check GFWL.

Yeah, it will not make a difference if it is free.

I'm sure that huge 360 fans find it very useful to retain all their friend lists and achievements and whatnot when they game on their PCs, but that's a pretty limited audience compared to what MS is clearly trying to accomplish.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

Other than cross-platform play with the 360, Games for Windows Live is pointless.

And playing cross-platform is pretty silly with most FPSs...everyone just gets pissed at the keyboard and mouse users.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Sorry, I did not realize there was another thread.  Are there any x-platform fps games out right now?

this will only be good for cross platform play

I still, will never buy a game that uses Live on PC... unless they make it better than other services. As it stands they have a long way to go.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

If there is it will be taken down soon.  Mouse and keyboard owns gamepads every day of the week.  It just wouldn't be fair to the console players.
