Forums - Sony - More Details About the Afrika

Recently I read an aricle about the game Afrika in a Hong Kong computer magazine.  I tried my best to translate it into English.  Hope that it gives you more details about what this game is.

Introduction
You are a photographer, and you are visitor to a Africa safari park to explore and learn the zoology.
You can choose to be a male or female photographer.  And there is a temporary camp site as the base where you can communicate with the headquarter through E-mails and receive mission information.  You can check the map and study the landscape of the place you are going to explore, arrange the required photographing equipments and then start the journey.

1. Mission
The mission is to take a photo about the wild animals according to the requirements. After the photo is taken, it is sent to the headquarter and it is evaluated according to the following factors:
- Whether fulfill all the requirements
- Picture quality
- Composition of the photo
- Rarity of the photo
- ...
The better the photo you take, the higher the reward you get and you can use the reward to buy better photographing equipments and challenge harder missions.

2. Camera Control
It uses Sixaxis motion detection so you control the controller just like a camera, use buttons to zoom, focus, and adjust other parameters to take the photos.  And different camera you choose will have different resolution, aperture, focal length, shutter so the photos taken by different cameras will have different quality.  If you rotate the controller to 90 degree, it will take the photo in portrait.  The photo will become blurred if you do not hold the controller steadily.

3. Techniques
You should observe and understand the life of the wild animals first.  You may even need to have a closer look to know their habbits so you can find an ideal place to take the photo.  Since most animals will escape when they see human, you often need to hide behind trees or other barriers.

4. Free Move
You can walk freely, take the jeep, or take the ballon to move around and enlarge the area for taking photos.  The jeep is driven by the local guide and he can help you to find the animals.  Besides, you can take photos in the jeep or walk out to take photos.

5. Beware of Attack
The closer the distance from the animals, the better photos you can take but also the easier you are attacked.  Beware of dangerous animals like lions, panthers and snakes.  They will approach you silently and assault you.  You should look around and pay attention to the protection color of the animals in advance, or follow the on screen instructions to press the buttons when required.

Tips:
- In the progress of playing the game, you will also unlock the contents of the animal library.  You can also build your own Afrika field guide with your own photos and videos.
- You can not only see the life of various wild animals (migration, looking for food, hunting,...), you can also enjoy the various scenery of nature (dawn, sunset, dusty wind,...).  You are like watching "National Geographic"!

Sounds like a free roaming pokemon snap. And weirdly enough I think I'm kinda excited.

...

That sounds REALLY dumb. Why is SCEJ wasting their time with Afrika and Aquanauts.

They could be actually developing a JRPG for the PS3 but they are making dumb photography games.

I will be suprised if Afrika and Aquanauts both sell even 200k combined lifetime.

Feel free to add me as your friend-PSN ID: Bobo012893

sounds relaxing..... ever been to a real safari? I have and they are awesome. this will be great for those who might never get a chance to go visit these places like the "Serengeti"worlds largest safari park.

Thats very nice and I wont be buying it at launch buy sometime later.

Or Endless Ocean with better graphics and a more narrow focus on photography. Motion stuff with the controller being the Camera sounds pretty cool if it's done well. Just wish we knew when it's coming out.

I read that it's not exactly free-roaming, at least in the sense that you can't drive where you want. It appears from the videos you have a tour guide or something.

Regardless, it's a beautiful looking game. If I get a PS3 later this year for LBP, I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on Afrika.

And Aquanauts Holiday, as well. Nyaa nyaa, Bobo12893!

boring ... Beautiful but BORING.

Now Big Game Hunt. This could be cool. A bit like the Deer Hunter games that were so popular for a while.

They should get together with the Killzone2 guys and put some heavy weapons and plasma rifles in this game.

i think it sounds interesting and seems like a foray into the more adult/casual gamer population.
