When asked about the viability of future exclusives, Hashimoto was somewhat elusive. "[Releasing on a] single platform doesn't necessarily limit the market," he said. "There's software that's specific to certain hardware, and uses those capabilities to its max. Nintendo does that, and there's Gears of War for Microsoft. These titles do very well."

I agree with what he has to say, and I think this is the future. The problem is the company hurt most by this trend, is MS. Sony has learned from Nintendo that the best way to generate long lasting IP's for your platform, is to make them. They are starting that now with LBP, R&C, Resistance, God of War, Jak and Dexter, Uncharted, and many others (not sure about GT, is that 1st party?)

The problem is MS has very few 1st party games. If this man is correct, that guarantees things like MGS5 going mulit-plat, and Gears 3 going that way as well. (why I thought the above was funny, that he used a 3rd party game for MS).

MS needs to either start buying companies like EA, or worry about the coming years.

 absolutely

NO third party game is going to change hardware sales. don't deceive yourselves into thinking that FF13 is going to turn the tide on the console wars.

history has given us proof of this. read up on the releases of gta4, dmc4, mgs4, gow, etc.

none of them has had a long term impact on hardware sales. and ff13 won't be any different.

Microsoft's first party offerings leave a bit to be desired for sure, but they still have a stable of franchises: Halo, Fable, Banjo Kazooie, Viva Pinata, Perfect Dark and Forza Motorsport. They also have a new IP, Alan Wake, in the works.

They also publish third party games such as Ninja Gaiden 2 and Lost Odyssey, sealing their exclusitivity.

GT is first party and EA wouldn't be viable on a single platform.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Of those, only Halo and Fable are important franchises.

if you are talking about recent history then you are right, in ps1 era sony won with great exclusive 3rd party games like FF7, PS2 didnt need it but GTA3 still made sure its victory, so yes big 3rd party helps big time

By and large I agree with Hashimoto.  IIRC, FFX sold 8 million copies.  Development costs were increasing so Squaresoft and Enix merged to become... SquareEnix.  And with a bigger budget, FFXII was developed and released at 5 million copes sold.  Hmmm...  Something doesn't look right.  Development costs are increasing from the FFVII days while the competition is gettting fiercer than ever.  And as early in this gen's stage, I honest don't think that the release of FFXIII on just the PS3 will cut it.
