Forums - Nintendo - So E3 is not about having fun, just wowing us.

I'll admit they looked dorky in that video, but they at least looked geniune in the fun they were having. There was a guy in the Microsoft presentation (I think for 10 minutes), who kept saying how excited and thrilled he was to announce everything. Saying he was thrilled and excited. In the same flat tone. That got applause, but people who were genuinly excited for the games they were showing off are a big disappointment. TV Tropes.org calls this "Stop Having Fun Guys".

This isn't about any of the games themselves, or whether the announcements are any good. It was just that people were trying to do more than act like salesmen to the crowd, and it seems people wanted salesmen. They wanted to just have a spectacle to be amazed by, instead of people actually showing off what their work can do.

Then again, it may be that it was that it wasn't a core game showing this off, but it still had more subtance than half the trailers at that show. Not that any of those games won't be any good (the God of War series has a strong track record), just that we saw more of Wii Sports Resort than just a video, and that was somehow wrong to everyone.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Yes, because only Nintendo makes fun games.

Truly none of the games shown besides Nintendo's could be fun and surely you can't have a game but fun and amazing at the same time.  Why that would simply be crazy.

Because I meant how they developed the games compared to other companies, not merely how they just presented these games. No wait, I did mean the latter point. Please respond to the points I actually made.

And what points are you actually making?

Okay, looking over the OP, I see it's not that clear.

I don't mean any of their games, or anyone else. I just meant how they were genuinely having fun showing off the game, and people act as though this was a moment of shame, while a guy in another presentation just tells people he's excited, and it's treated as awesome.

See the problem with people preferring telling over showing?

It just seemed people didn't want a genuine demonstration of how games would be good. They just wanted a bunch of applause generating announcements.

That and what JiaJia stated.

Ever since we saw the cutscenes of FFVII and then got lego people in actual gameplay, there's been a trend toward selective viewing.  Just show the audience the good parts and let them discover the rest when they buy the game.  Doing that is win/win almost all around.  The conference host (MS, Sony...etc) looks better, the developer looks good for having a good looking game, and the audience is impressed.  Works out fine until they buy the actual game and get lego people.

Of course, there are great looking games that deliver great experiences but they're not as fun to talk about.

Meanwhile, you can essentially demo the game.  The problem with this is that the game loses that air of mystery and surprise.  The game can also take a blow to its hype levels ala Wii Music.  Had Nintendo just kept talking it up, I'm betting a lot more people would be saying "That sounds interesting."  By showing it, they've turned off quite a few people.  From an ethical standpoint, this is good.  If you're an honest businessperson, you want the consumer to fully understand the product they are buying and be able to enjoy or make good use of it rather than feel they got cheated with some sort of bait & switch (like a great looking game with only 7 hours of gameplay).  Still, lost customers are lost customers...

Edited the OP to hopefully make it clear on what this is about.

BTW, I think showing off Wii Sports wasn't about losing or keeping mystery, but to show further potential. I'm guessing that precision control is going to be in the upcoming Zelda game, but there is plenty of mystery about that.

And I don't think those people are lost customers if they don't like those games in the first place.

They are lost customers if they were interested then this showing completely turned them off though.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.
