i don't think they needed to pay anything unless Sony had a deal in place beforehand. If there was no deal I think SE would likely have voluntarily done it. A better question is how much would Sony have had to pay to stop this?

I was going to say nothing, but they are going to do tons of advertising featuring FFXIII and Xbox 360.  Standard for MS and Sony.

Of course, the deal was clear from the beggining, FF 13 goes exclusive for the PS3 on Japan, NA and EU is multi, but NA will be pushed more by MS and EU will have similar campains from both sides with a trend to the PS3, the amount of sales will be very similar to this deal, and the clearly winner is SE, followed by MS...
