E3 2008: DS Accelerometer / New DS Forthcoming?

Buh?

July 14, 2008 - It's E3 time and the rumors are spreading like wildfire. Sources tell IGN that development studio Activision is preparing to release a new peripheral designed to give Nintendo DS motion/tit functionality. The small add-on will take a cue from Guitar Hero: On Tour and plug into the Game Boy Advance slot on the DS. One of the first games to make use of this new peripheral will be the next version of Tony Hawk.

Insiders also assert that Nintendo itself may alternatively be planning to release new DS cartridges with built in accelerometers, a possibility that could eventually negate the importance of Activision's peripheral.

In semi-related news, IGN has separately heard from trusted insiders that Nintendo could be planning to debut a slimmed down version of its handheld complemented by a dramatically reduced (sub-$100) price tag. Whether or not this made-over DS will include built-in accelerometer functionality is not known. There is a chance that the Big N will show off the updated DS at E3 2008 this week.

A redesigned DS might ship sans a GBA slot, which could explain why Nintendo might be separately developing accelerometer-based cartridges despite Activision's own efforts.

As always, until IGN can validate the information through multiple sources, readers should consider the hearsay posted in this article as rumor. We will update with new details as they become available.

Around the Network

Let's remember how well tilt works on the iPod touch/Phone (people hate it).

...omg...can...not...wait...

Ok I don't have a DS so I may be 100% wrong on this but i'm just asking based off of what was in that article.

GH:On Tour uses the GBA slot.
New DS may not have a GBA slot.

New DS may not be able to play GH:On Tour???

I knew it was happening...

Around the Network

It still could be true. They could just be dropping the price of the DSL to $99 and then creating a DSMicro w/o GBA slot @ $99-$129.

i.e. two skus. This is similar to the GBMicro. It didn't have all of the features of the previous GBA/SP. Granted, I don't think it sold all that well, but, there are plenty of DS users who probably never use the GBA slot. I know I didn't, and from what I know it is used for, I wouldn't.

So, if there was a cheaper/slimmer/brighter/longer battery/better in some form model that didn't have it. I would buy it.

ha ha He said "tit functionality".

Id get it, be my 3rd DS, but I'd still get it.

Well, here were my predictions

I predict a new DS design this year or early next year

I believe that Nintendo will release a new DS design at the end of this year or early next year. The GBA had new models every two years, 2001, 2003, 2005.

Also, the Wii will be two years old, meaning that no new Nintendo hardware will be released for over two years. You can't tell me they haven't been working on something all this time.

I give a small chance that a mobile phone device will be announced within the next year.

Will the DS get another redesign?

Seeing the new Apple Air made me think that the DS could undergo a similar transformation. First, geting rid of the GBA slot, that thing takes up a ton of space. Next, get LED backlighting. Technology has also improved since the DS Lite was released, so better battery life is possibly by using smaller components and better batteries.

Imagine a half in thick DS that folded up like a makeup case. The women would go nuts over it. Also, it would be cool if the case was metal.

this would be cool,we will see tomorrow if its true
