Depends, if you have to roleplay in game than it might be female or male, but with these mainstream "don't use your brains" games I would say that I rather watch female on my screen than male.

Male.. but I am probably biased because most of the good games I've played have had male protagonists (Samus being the exception of course)

Normally I´d say male to be able to relate better. BUt if it´s a good game, anyone is good.
