Forums - Sales - 2/17/2009 -- Analog TV gone... effect on PS3 sales?

How can people think it will have NO IMPACT at all?

HDTV is becoming the standard everyone that has a console now will most likely have an HDTV soon if they don't already. Meaning the PS3 and 360 will be a little more attractive in the near future. It will not affect the Wii, it will still sell great.

I don't think the OP is saying it's going to be a "turning point" in the gen, just that it will make a positive impact some time in the near future.

This doesn't concern the people "too poor" to buy a console. What this is, is the beginning of this generation weeding out the old and replacing it with new. VHS to CD, Analog to HD.

If perferring the PS3 over the 360 makes me a fanboy.. I guess I am guilty..

List of 360 Games I would like to have: Alan Wake

List of PS3 Games I would like to have: LBP, FFXIII(if it ever comes), R2(maybe)

List of Wii Games I would like to have: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (It's not an exclusive but it would be awesome)

The digital switch only changes for over the air signals, not cable or satellite tv. Those people who don't have cable or satellite tv are probably not willing to pay much if anything for entertainment including video games.

fish is right, it will be a long time coming. most of those tvs need to die, and if parts of my family are any indication that may be up to 20 years, though when it is replaced sure, it will help the next playstatin xbox, wii

come play minecraft @  mcg.hansrotech.com

XBL name: Goddog

^ once again the people that aren't buying game consoles are not the people that should be considered. It should be the people that didn't have HDTV's that DO HAVE GAME CONSOLES. That is where the change will take place.

Considering that digital -> analog converters cost a good $60, and are an irritating accessory to have to throw in your living room, I'm thinking that Feb 17th, 2009 will incur something of a spike in HDTV sales -- just how large this spike will be, I'm not going to hazard a guess.

Will this have an indirect effect on PS3 sales in late 2008 through early 2009? About what % of (North American) households own TVs not capable of receiving a digital signal?

As I recall, the law requiring TVs to have a digital tuner has only been in effect since March of 2007.

Id imagine that the number of people affected are monior, as most of the population has either Cable or Direct TV,which serves as the conversion between digital and analog. For example, my 32" RCA that Ive had since 1992 already is hooked up to cable. So after 2009, it won't matter at all. I'll have my ol' faithful until it dies and there are no parts for it anymore. To me, the only benefit of HDTV is moving it, since they're light. I don't care much for HD movies or any of that, hurts my eyes.

The biggest thing that scares me is trying to find sets for classic consoles.

What percentage of people in the USA get their TV through antenna?

Of those how many of these people will spend $500+ on a HDTV when they can get two coupons for Digital to Analogue converters from the government (worth $40 each) for free?

Being that a high percentage of Wii owners play their Wii on a HDTV, what makes you think that these people who haven't seen value in HDTV yet will abandon the Wii in favour of a HD console?

"The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has estimated that there are 69 million analog television sets that will be potentially impacted by the digital transition, consisting of 19.6 million households (17 percent of all households) relying exclusively on over-the-air analog television sets, and an additional 14.7 million cable and satellite households receiving some over-the-air programming on analog sets.  The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has estimated that 36.5 million analog televisions (comprising 13.5 million households) will require converter boxes; according to CEA, an additional 30 million analog sets are used for non-broadcast purposes such as playing video games or watching DVDs, and will therefore likely not require converter boxes."

There are a large number of posts here, like HappySqurriel's post, which seem to address the topic as if I were stating "ZOMG PS3 sales will increase tenfold!" and then I apparently go on to say "Your Wii sUkZ0rz! , throw it away, and get a real console!!"  I said nothing of the sort.  I am posing questions for discussion.  I have a Wii, you know -- and I like it too.  Go figure.

I am merely postulating that the 17% of american households which will be affected by this relatively drastic change may not choose to partake in waiting for $40 off coupons -- they may merely go out and buy themselves a new TV.  Walmart, etc. are certainly posing this option as a solution they would like the consumer to partake in (of course they are) -- I would wager that a significant portion, perhaps even a majority of the 17% households affected will not partake in the coupon offer (its not exactly common street knowledge -- heck, come 2/17/09 a lot of these people will probably be surprised by the event... and upset, despite the long-standing warnings), and a decent % of those households may very well be interested in purchasing a new HDTV, rather than merely replacing their old set with a new non-HD set.  These people are apparently thrifty (or just plain poor), and aren't going to throw money away on an intermediate item which they may wish to replace in a short period of time (although some will, of course).

I'm stating that not all these households are poor, and frankly, HDTVs aren't nearly as expensive as many seem to believe.  You can pickup a 19" LCD 720p television for around $350 (or less), unless you're a brand-name snob.  The 480p TVs just aren't that much cheaper, and in 6 months time, the disparity will be even less.  19 million American households is a lot to send shopping for a replacement television -- and while not all will take this option, you have to consider that a reasonable number may very well jump on this as an opportunity to update their living room.  The sheer scale of the transition may be enough to move many many HD consoles... or maybe not.  I would, personally, call a few hundred thousand units a pretty hefty number in the console market -- and I cannot discount that as a remote possibility (although I think 100K units, to borderline buyers who bought in due to this change, may be a reasonable guess... and that's a tiny percentage of those 19 million).

Assuming all analog TV owners, who do not have cable/satellite (17% of all US households, as stated previously) all must be "poor" or "uninterested in video games" is a pretty monumental assumption (especially since low-income families have never been shown to play fewer videogames, according to a pretty large number of studies by many groups, including NPD).  I agree that there may be some measure of reasoning behind that broad generalization, but its hardly enough to discount the colossal number of households that may very well be looking to upgrade, rather than mailing in for a couple coupons that they may, or may not, even know are available.

It really is fascinating to see all the posts willing to jump to that conclusion, however, as well as attempt to paint this thread as some sort of pro-PS3, anti-Wii thing.

(edit: sorry to pick on you specifically, HappySqurriel... no offense intended)
