Forums - Sales - If the Wii was $100

I read that Nintendo initially wanted to sell the Wii for $100. Hypothetically, if the Wii was $100 how many Wiis you think would have been sold at this point in time assuming Nintendo could have met demand? And do you think Nintendo would have made back the money for selling the console less than it cost to produce?

... it would be £150

The same, supply is the problem.

My guess? Approximately 28.46M units as of 2008.06.28.

Only difference is, they'd have made approximately US$4.2 billion less.

What you read was a lie, Nintendo's strategy isn't based on the same clause of the western companies (even sony, though they aren't doing it because they want to.) The point for them is to make money right out of the box, selling it at a hundred dollars even now when the cost of production has declined would cost them $90 per Wii sold.

Also nothing would change if they did do that, as supply vs demand is horrible right now - but not as bad as it was last year.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

I don't think Nintendo (being an extremely conservative company) would ever increase capacity to the production level a $100 Wii would require. But if the Wii was $100 and production was like 5 million a month then Sony and 360 would have given up on this gen.

Same number, supply is what is holding Wii numbers back, not price.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

Haha. More people will sell it on EBAY for more profits. Isn't that what people buy wii's for anyway? Besides gaming of couse, but who doesn't like good 'ol profit?

Same amount , except if hardware was weaker , and they could ship more ... then more :P

You're right, Nintendo would never do that, it would mean massively decreasing profits.

As for the horrible supply vs demand, well, I have to disagree on that with you.. you should pay a visit to Holland next time you're in the area.. :p Wiis available and readily in stock wherever you go, I've seen hundreds of them in every single store that carries videogames, and it's actually been like that for weeks now.
