FF is exactly what is bringing down SE at the moment.Due to their insecurities they have gone into a play safe mode when it comes to their titles.Look at the sheer number of FF ports, remakes and spinoffs being made in such a period of time. The problem is that most of SE fans aren't truly SE fans, but FF fans.

SE have released quite a number of other well made rpgs but due to SE's attitude of playing safe, they push the FF games into the focus of the audience instead of games such as TWEWY and the like.

Unless they can reinvent the series much like Nintendo did with NSMB,Galaxy and MKDS/Wii I can see FF starting to shrink slowly as the decade goes on.

SE should have a dedicated team on the side trying to create a new/existing(preferably new, since it would be fresh) franchise with the intent of it being greater than FF and attract newer players as well as the old FF fans.Once they have absorbed the old market they can then focus on making FF with smaller budgets and try to reinvent it now that less pressure is being put on the expectation of the game,or simply scrap the series altogether if FF doesn't transition too well into this 3rd generation of gaming that the DS/Wii has spawned.

I think the teams have been made already. Their first battlefront is the DS to explore possibilities on Wii.

Also, look at the Crystal Cronicles Franchise, The DS and WiiWare approach are the first signs that they want to make it a franchise on its own... They just need to take out the FF from it because they are very different. They gave a lot more support to the dev team

And with the port of Chrono Trigger out of the blue, many can speculate that they plan to revive it, for it had potential to be as good or even better than FF

Agreed. The name will decrease the value in the eyes of gamers since even though this game might be of AAA quality it will still only be seen "as another spinoff title for Wii while HD consoles get the main ones".

I understand that they placed the FF in the name to give some hype to the GC game. It could ba placed as a spinoff considering the many monsters that are common in the series, but the gameplay just didn't feel like any other FF.

But this time the FF name in it is not helping, for most Wii owners don't know what FF is and for the fans it will be considered a spinoff as you said. This is not like the Tales of series where they can get away with it.

Big franchises are expected to pull in mega profits. Look at GTAIV, that game alone pretty much keeps T2 alive. The same goes with SE, their big franchises are expected to pull in huge profits or the company will shrivel and die.

If low budget shovelware were so profitable, then THQ would be king. Instead EA, Activision and to a lesser degree SE are the big dogs because they have the big names pulling in big profits.

thank goodness fishyjoe said something before i did.

Seriously shovelware is not king and spin offs will not pay for big franchises.  FF 13 wil sell MORE then enough to make up for its development cost.

FF on the DS is a joke to its fans. Honostly if i heard the next one was going on the ds id flip shit and i know a whole bunch of people who would as well. Honostly, FF is pinacle of RPGS and one of the kings of storytelling, graphics, and gameplay. Putting it on the DS ruins all that. DQ is much more fitting for DS because of its art style, gameplay, and graphics.

You both just lost major points for calling games like The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, and countless other DS games from them "shovelware". Beautifully put gentlemen. Give yourselves a pat on the back for raising the term "shovelware" to account for games that people adore and get reviews in the 80s and 90s.

If square-enix don't put up some aaa-titles on the wii they will loose their leadership in the jrpg-market. when over 50% of the actual gamers don't see good games from square-enix they will lose their reputation, thats what already happens.

i never stated that. Its just your wrong when you say that DS games are what make them money. THeir key franchises are what do.

@OP: So you are saying they use the money earned with current games to fund future projects? Totally revolutionary concept, imo.

The cost of the major HD projects is absurd at the moment. It is quite reasonable to think that (unless Sony paid) Metal Gear Solid 4 did not make a profit yet. The development costs are supposed to be around $75 million. You can't make a huge profit if you're around 3 million sold (to retailers, but that's where Konami gets its money).
Same for GTA4, it costed an insane $100 million. This one has made a decent profit, but not a very big one compared to the PS2 versions.
FF13 faces the same problems. Sure it will sell a lot, but it also NEEDS to sell a lot. You have to take into acount that companies want a certain return on investment, that for the big titles should be at least around 30%, but probably more.
