Forums - Sony - Why so few million sellers on the PS3?

Seriously, it's only at 15 right now. The Wii, which was released at the same time has, like what, 25. Even the PSP, which is by far the sh!ttiest software seller overall has 20. And if the PS3 wants to catch up to the X360 then it needs at least 25+ exclusive million sellers, since every multiplatform release appears to sell as well if not better on the 360.

I'm blaming it on the blu ray freaks who inflate the hardware sales without really increasing the number of people who buy/purchase PS3 games.

Look at the install bases.....

EDIT: and the time on market against the 360

There hardly were any good games.

Although about 87% according to a recent study seem to watch Blu-Ray movies on the PS3 (UK). But PS3 users buy about the same amount of games per user per year as people are buying games for the 360.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Install base...

Around the Network

1) 360 owners have owned their consoles much longer on average. Up to 12 months longer for Japan and the US, 16-17 months for Europe/Australia and more for some countries.

2) Some games are 360 to PS3 ports, games released later on the PS3. So multi-platform owners may have already bought the PC/360 version. So such million sellers on the 360 may not turn out to be million sellers on the PS3.

3) Still a smaller install base worldwide. Locally where the PS3 has already reached or gone past the 360 install base, PS3 games sold better. For example GTA IV in Germany sold better on the PS3.

Guys, the reasons are pretty obvious.

For one thing, the Wii has a handy package of first party games which are most of the time guaranteed million sellers. Besides that it has about 46% marketshare so I actually think the amount of million sellers is pretty low.

As for the 360, it has been said already. It was out longer. Without any competition, it managed to be much more popular in PAL than it would have been otherwise. This allowed it to have plenty of million sellers that it might not have had in another case. Additionally, the 360 has a high attach rate. My thinking is that people are buying lots of old games at lower prices, but there could be a bajillion reasons.

15 is actually an impressive amount considering that Sony doesn't have the first party offerings of the Wii (and a userbase less than half as well) and still has 60% as many million sellers as the Wii.

As for having less million sellers than the PSP, there are three things to say about that:

1. PSP software is grossly undertracked

2. There are several titles on the PSP that should be at a million that aren't

3. The PSP has been out for about 4 years now

The 360 was unopposed for a whole year. So while it may not have had hardware dominance over this generation, it still has dominance in million sellers because when it launched, it was the only next-gen console, and it was the only way to play the games of this generation on a big screen and with advanced graphics. It managed to snag a lot of customers who might not have bought the original Xbox.

@ montana, with the PSP, in many cases the sales simply aren't tracked, and also, I do think that the software sales are quite low any, just not as ridiculously low as we have them at
