Looks like L4D is an early contender for most overrated game of the year.

If by "overrated" you meant "underrated," I'd agree.

Also, keep in mind just how different these 2 games are. Left 4 Dead is a multiplayer only game that will probably retail for $40. It's not supposed to have "kick-ass graphics" though it will definitely impress in various ways when the final version is released. It's the perfect co-op online shooter...it's the next Counter-Strike...it's the first cooperative zombie shooter...whatever you want to label it as...it's far from overrated. Hell, Will Wright mentioned AI Directors as one of the more important moves in recent gaming history. And if I trusted anyone to come out with a more sophisticated online FPS AI system, the makers of the CS: Source bot are already on their way.

Resistance 2 also has a lot going for it, it's made by one of the best console developers...I don't keep up the news for the game though so I won't try to talk about it.

Will Wright said that eh?  Neat.  Glad i'm not alone in thinking that.  I mean if it works... the applications for other games could be amazing.

Weapons- Resistance 2: L4D will have some pretty generic guns since that is really the style of game, R2 being more futuristic I would expect to have something a little more interesting than the shotgun, uzi, pistol, etc...

Enemies - Left 4 Dead: I think this might be a close category for a lot of people but for me the reason I go with L4D here is the awesome Boss infected and the fact that you will get to play them!  This one is a close one though.

AI - Left 4 Dead: Hands down with what we know right now L4D is has the more interesting AI, its one of the major selling points about the game.  The entire idea that it monitors the stress levels of each player and attempts to give them a balanced experience without overload or boredom is just awesome, this could seriously be a new staple of zombie games and possibly even FPS games in general if they pull it off like they say they have.

Art Direction - Neither?:  In terms of art direction they are both pretty similar, and they both have some aspects I like and don't like.  Pretty much a tie on this one imo.

Replay value - Left 4 Dead: This one ties back in with the AI director and the fact that scenarios will be different every time and that you can literally play the exact same level 100 times and not know where the zombies are going to be or where they are going to come from.  Add in the boss infected side of things where the PCs are doing their best to outsmart you and I can see myself playing this game for several years.

Graphics - Resistance 2: Valve has never really gone for stunning visuals but instead focused on universal performance on a variety of machines.  Combine that with Insomniacs dedicated focus on making the game look awesome and I think it should be clear not only which one will look better but which one should look better as well.

Sales- No Idea:  We don't really have hard sales numbers for PC games anyways and I could easily see both games breaking 3 million units.

Overall- Left 4 Dead: Clearly for my taste I will like L4D more, but I certainly plan on playing both games because they both look awesome~

This mimicks my own opinions.  I don't know if I'll buy Resistance 2 or not yet.  I'll look for Resistance for cheap when my PS3 comes in to see if I have interest in the franchise or not.  I'm definitely more interested in R2 than KZ2, and I expect R2 to be good for fans of Resistance and generally good as a console FPS.  It just doesn't show the evolutions for the genre as a whole that L4D shows.

I know you said that people that say they are different games should go die and all... But how can you base a tatical online multiplayer only title to a Single Player driven game?

I think Resistance 2 is the better game based souly on the fact it has a story AND 60 player multiplayer. Though I think Left 4 Dead is going to be amazing. just, not so amazing if I dont have any friends on, unlike R2.

I'm putting more of an emphasis on co-op. As you know, Resistance 2 has a campaign dedicated towards the 8 player co-op with classes and everything.

But it's just a co-op campaign... the same thing that's been in co-op games for 10 years.  It's not doing anything different in co-op.  L4D is added whole new dynamics to co-op.

Wait what? I never heard of a game with a dedicated co-op campaign before R2. Care to elaborate?

Choosing between these two games is not difficult for me, I choose R2, hands down.

I don't think that L4D is gonna be a bad game, by any means, but what makes my choice so easy, is the fact that I would much rather have a great SP campign over great MP any time.

R2 gives me a solid SP campaign, with awesome boss encounters (the only one we know of this far is the Leviathan, 300 ft tall monstrosity), an 8 player co-op campaign (with its own seperate story, and has its own bossencounters, some of which you must be 8 players to be able to defeat.) and it gives me a 60 man online player, with some great squadbased combat (every previewer agrees, its good online).

L4D gives me a solid SP campaign where I will be teamed with three AI partners where we are to kill our way through zombie mobs, trying to accomplish various objectives. The SP campaign is also the MP campaign as it is here you have co-op. The game features revolutionary AI (the AI director), which makes sure that every playthrough is different from the ones you have already played, with different spawns of zombie masses and bosses. You also have the option to play as a zombie if you die.

(and yes, I know less about L4D then I do about R2)

Another thing that makes my choice easy is that Valve has ever only made one game which kept me interested in it. Portal. I don't do much in online, so I never got into TF1/2 and CS, and for some reason I was always bored by the Half-Life games.

I am most generally going to play L4D, and I will probably like it. But I wont play until I have a better PC, it would be a shame to play it on my laptop (if it can even play it that is. It just barely played Portal).

So R2 wins, because of the amount of content.

The only thing that matters is who will buy which game, i will buy Resistance 2 and i will not be buying left 4 dead.

I wouldn't really call L4D's campaign SP, but it certainly can be played with one person, and it can certainly still be awesome. One correction, you don't turn into a zombie when you die...there's a campaign mode, then a "vs" mode or something like that.   When you die, you die...at least until your team reaches a checkpoint...you can respawn there if the rest of them make it.

In the campaign mode, the "boss infected" are AI controlled...for a more cinematic campaign I suppose. In the vs. mode, there's 4 survivors and 4 player-controlled boss infected.  You pick a team from the start, no switching over.  It's a lot like campaign, but slightly different? That part has yet to be revealed, so none of us know enough about it yet. It will be awesome though.

I think this was a bad topic, as these games are so different.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Weapons- While I'm sure Resistance will have the cooler weapons, nothing beats a shotgun when blowing a zombies head off. Left4Dead

Enemies- Endless waves of zombies always win. Left4Dead

AI- Well since Resistance is primarily a single player game and Left4Dead is purely multiplayer with only mindless zombies I guess Resistance 2 gets this one.  I know a lot of people are talking about the director, but I don't lump that in with the AI (even though I should), I put it in its own awesome catagory.

Art Direction- Resistance 2, but only because it's hard to make a new interesting zombie art direction. In my opinion they're both pretty boring.

Replay value- Left4Dead

Graphics- Resistance 2

Sales- Left4Dead -- go go Steam

Overall- Left4Dead easily

R2 is the much better game in every way. L4D is just mindless shooting with no tactics or anything.

And here is a perfect example of someone pretending they know something that they really know nothing about.  Good job!

Twesterm, it's a multiplayer game, but the big selling point of L4D is the AI Director...it controls when and where zombies spawn. If the gamers are wiped out after a huge fight, the Director will slow things down for tension...then release another wave at the right time.

It checks for your mood and stress based on what's going on to play procedural scary music...and this AI Director, by its nature, will work on any custom map you give it...which is really awesome, no more drawing bot paths for the AI to walk around on.

I'd definitely give L4D the AI award hehe.

well. just based on the gameplay of L4D i cant get excited. i can see myself loving CERTAIN instances of all out zombie rush...but it just seems and feel like by the time ive been playing it for 30 minutes teh gimmick of madness would run out. I dont know, i dont like how it looks so far....just basing it on the gameplay video in the OP i think it looks tiresome.

No contest, comparing those gameplay vids resistance wins hands down.
Now ill probably get left 4 dead on the pc and resistance on my ps3 so i'll probably be playing both.
But according to the gameplay videoes presented the animation seems very outdated along with the graphics in left 4 dead. It also seems like the AI is pretty bad. (i wont claim i know a lot about the game but i'm just judging from what i've seen)
The sounds in l4d also seem pretty generic and repetitive while resistance seems to have variated voice chatter... It also doesen't seem like anyone in l4d was helping eachother and only took care of themselves. Gameplay seemed pretty normal.. i don't see the revolution this is supposed to be ?

In my book resistance wins.. as mentioned.. no contest.
