I think you severely over-estimate the affect a FFVII remake would have.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

Disagree, FFVII should have a similar effect boosting the sales as MGS4, GTA4, etc...

Long time before we see a FF7 remake.

S-E is just going to release FF4 remake for the NDS

So that still leaves FF5 and FF6 remakes first

Honestly, I don't think an FF7 remake would have any more of a lasting effect on PS3 sales than MGS4 did: that is to say, zero. Most of the FF7 Remake Believers have already bought PS3s, because that's what PS3 and 360 owners are doing this generation: they get a console in anticipation of what they believe will come out, almost like some kind of investment.

Or, to look at it another way, the FF7 Remake has already sold millions of PS3s, and it didn't even have to be released to do it. If selling systems is Sony's and Square-Enix's goal, there is almost no need to spend any more money on it; it's driven almost all the hardware sales it's going to.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. If Sony gets FFVII remake that will only mean, that PS3 will definitely sell over 100 mln. =)

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

FF5 +FF6 remakes were released for PS1 and GBA

It's just a game...
of the 150+ million potential console buyers market maybe only 7% cares about FFVII.. could be less.. not all the buyers from the original are fans..
