Forums - Sales - More evidence of no PS3 price cut this year

its kind of obvious that Sony isn't going to cut the price of the ps3
by the way wasnt already posted in another thread?

Before their last financial statement I was expecting another price cut this holiday, but then they said their target was profitibility, not market share. This just confirms that.

It seems to me that Sony just want to cut their previous losses with the PS3 and obtain profitibility as soon as possible.

This is Sony's CFO saying this to investors, not a response from someone at SCEE to rumours of a price cut. You have to take him at his word.

Even at $400 PS3 is selling pretty well now, after already cutting the price by $200 and still losing significant amounts on hardware it would be a strange business decision to cut prices again.

If 360 price cut seriously dents PS3 sales in the US expect them to add extra value; ie game bundles, a price cut for PS3 is really unlikely for this year. Last quarter they already said price elasticity of PS3 was not the same as PS2 and they can't drop the price anymore for now.

Take adantage of it, PS3 is probably the only piece of Sony hardware which isn't over-priced right now.

I think I remember Sony gave an official announcement that they wouldn't cut prices three days before the 40Gb PS3 was announced. So you may think about price cuts what you want, but statements from Sony officials are not relevant .

No PS3 price cuts this year. They don't have a reason to do it, but they have a reason not to do it. PS3 sales are MUCH higher than they were one year ago, they're outselling the 360 WW, so they have no reason to lose billions. They are businessmen, not fanboys.

Guess it depends on how much effect the 360 price cut has.

That was to the media. This is to investors.

The difference won't be so important when they lower the price for christmas. Although on the other hand they will have kept the price for a year. So that's pretty stable

Price cut for cristmas? That's not impossible, but only if 360 starts selling very well and/or Sony further cuts production costs.

There was a 360 price cut before GTAIV - in Europe.

Sony is forecasting 10M PS3 sold this fiscal year which it can do at the current price point(s) so even if they manage to reduce the production cost of the PS3 I see them keeping the same price so as to recoup some of the losses they accumulated so far.

This means that the most likely scenario in which Sony drops the price is if the PS3 sales dipped significantly (e.g. 360 price drops lowers PS3 sales; didn't work in Europe but might in America) so that they wouldn't be able to reach their forecast. But a pricecut in such a situation is hardly a good sign as it would be a similar situation to the 360 European price cuts this year which were seen more as a desperate move than an herald of 360 domination by PS3 fans. A PS3 pricecut in similar circumstances (dipping sales) in America this year (the only likely scenario for a price cut this year IMO) should be seen in the same way (and in the same way as the gimped 40GB release as a substitute to a price cut; a move that worked very well).

So rather than cheering about a potential but very unlikely price cut this year that would more than likely be a sign of struggling on Sony's part, Sony fans should be cheering that Sony DOES NOT need such a price cut this year as it means it doesn't get in a bad enough situation to warrant a pricecut in the first place.

You never lie to stockholders because they can have you removed in a heartbeat for doing such things.

Sony has to figure out how to sell more games first before they try to get a handle on production costs and lower the PS3's price to cause even more losses per console sold. Nintendo is pounding them in the states and in Japan. A 360 price cut isn't necessarily their primary concern.
