Sony's already given up on winning. All they're focusing on now is turning a profit.

sure, i think everyone knows that Sony has made big mistakes with the ps3, but i dont think Sony's main goal was to continue to dominate the gaming industry
their main goal was basically to win the format war with blu ray by including blu ray in their console
of course, they have accomplished that, and now they have a lot of work ahead to gain some marketshare again in the gaming industry.

Of course it was, and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. You don't go from making a 100 million selling behemoth to thinking "Second place seems like a good place to be." They just mis-read the market and thought people would flock to their technological colossus and it didn't happen because the Wii was cheaper and more fun at launch, and the 360 already had a huge library of good games.

He said MAIN GOAL.  And he's right.  Sony would be fine with selling 100 million PS3s but taking second place, establishing Blu-Ray in the process.  See, if Wii sells more, Sony hasn't "dominated the industry" but PS3 could still be ultra-successful.  Sony definitely wants console and games sales, though, and still they're plugging away, sometimes ponderously, to achieve that.

They knew Blu-Ray drive would slow down PS3 initially, and they included one anyway; they just thought that in the end, Blu-Ray would guarantee some level of allure for PS3, and that a Blu-Ray PS3 drive would basically guarantee that Blu-Ray would KO HD-DVD.

Of course they made mistakes. Lots of them ahha. But lucky for them they were coming off such a massive brand from Ps2 that they will still easily be able to pull off a second place. Although its a disappointment, if Nintendo or MS had made those mistakes thing would have been a lot more bleak. Must be nice to make mistakes and come out fine haha.

also the blu ray has won as next gen format the ps3 will take off

Nobody cares about Blu-ray, it's too soon, not big enough a step in quality, and costs too much.

VHS lasted nearly 25 years, peple aren't interested in replacing DVDs in less than 10, especially when they only overtook VHS in 2003, only 5 years ago.

It isn't like HDTVs are the sitting in every home either, most people don't have one.

Sony tried copying the PS2/DVD player 'package' with PS3/Blu-ray. It failed, horribly.

Difference being that Blu-Ray drives play DVDs and upscale them.  DVD drives didn't play VHSs, so the transition this time will be more organic, b/c people don't need to replace thier whole library at once.

Blu Ray movies are selling better than DVD discs were at the same point in their lifetime.  Your last sentence is a failure.

Do not underestimate the importance (to Sony) of making Blu-ray the winning format. They generate revenue on every Blu-ray disc and player sold. The Blu-ray decision came down to royalties. As long as Blu-ray takes off (ie. is not circumvented by digital distribution) nobody at Sony is crying.

do people really think the ps3 and 360 compete directly with the wii anyway? i doubt it, i actually think the wii and ps3 benefit from each other....put it this way

when ps3 came out production costs were roughly $860 a piece(don't believe me, look it up), but now they've dropped below $400 so selling the ps3 is actually viable and also the blu ray has won as next gen format the ps3 will take off

I'm not sure I fully comprehend what you mean davidc538

You state that PS3 and Wii "benefit from each other".

You then quote production cost reductions for the PS3.

How does this benefit the Wii or vice versa ? Surely it will mean increased competition as Sony may be able to afford a price reduction.

its hard to understand i know, but to me it seems clear that sony did not really want to sell very many ps3's when they first came out because they were so expensive to produce, people see a 600 dollar machine and a 250 dollar machine and buy there kids the 250$ one, the Wii really cut sony's losses down in the beginning and at the same time sony mustv'e help the wii gain alot of popularity. back when these machines came out people were pissed over ps3

Quoted for absolute truth.  I couldn't agree with you more.  The only people who have ever bought a Wii and will ever buy a Wii are parents buying the cheapest console for their little kids who have no idea what a good games console is and will be happy with anything.

We all know all three consoles have problems but honestly PS3 has the most by far. In terms of problems its something like this PS3 >>>>>>>>>>>>(360+Wii)*10

Well I wil admit I am a big PS3 fan. Not a fanboy, but I do like sony products. I own a ps3 and wii, and a shit load of games. I for one have been a little put off by the ps3. For me it does what I got it for though. I have a nice high def tv and the blu-ray mattered. I don't have time to play everygame that comes out (or that I buy even), so I have more than enough titles. I think was pisses me off was how the ps3 started. That first christmas in the US was a failure. They didnt make enough and they didnt have any huge title to sell it. Terrible marketing. People should be fired.

I think it is better now, but I still think the 360 has done an overall better job in the marketing, price, and gaming department. Is the ps3 a better piece of technology? sure. Does it matter that much though how nice the system is when another console kicks your ass in software. And don't get me started in ffxiii. I hate square. Talk about a company that can't meet deadlines. That company is a big piece of shit and thier games just keep getting longer and longer and less interesting. It will help sales when it comes out in 2020, but i think square is declining with thier shitty lazy game development and the fact they cant meet any deadlines.

You know SONY made big mistakes when a big PS3 fan itself admits the 360 is better.
