Of course it was, and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. You don't go from making a 100 million selling behemoth to thinking "Second place seems like a good place to be." They just mis-read the market and thought people would flock to their technological colossus and it didn't happen because the Wii was cheaper and more fun at launch, and the 360 already had a huge library of good games. |
He said MAIN GOAL. And he's right. Sony would be fine with selling 100 million PS3s but taking second place, establishing Blu-Ray in the process. See, if Wii sells more, Sony hasn't "dominated the industry" but PS3 could still be ultra-successful. Sony definitely wants console and games sales, though, and still they're plugging away, sometimes ponderously, to achieve that.
They knew Blu-Ray drive would slow down PS3 initially, and they included one anyway; they just thought that in the end, Blu-Ray would guarantee some level of allure for PS3, and that a Blu-Ray PS3 drive would basically guarantee that Blu-Ray would KO HD-DVD.
