Forums - Sony - Why are the final fantasy games so good?

I'd actually disagree with you on FF1 - the original NES version, and not the dumbed-down re-releases. It's actually the only game of the series that I really enjoyed, mostly because of its high difficulty level.

This man speaks the truth. Go find the original game and play it. Since you get to choose your party at the beginning of the game, there's tremendous replay value to be had. I should know, I've played through the original Final Fantasy close to a dozen times. Even wrote about it on my website too.

The franchise as a whole isnt amazing, but there are some stunning games amongst them. FF7 when it was released was the best RPG I played, not looking back its ages terribly and games like Secret of Mana have once again took over it. Some games in the series were just terrible FF9 for example.

After FF9 I have so much hate for the main series which is a shame as 10 was ment to be fantastic and I refused to try it, but I am looking in to the Chocabo game on the Wii as it looks like it adds something different.

Um, it IS fantastic.  It's easily one of the best FF's overall.

Final Fantasy X is probably one of the worst Final Fantasy games in the series.  Simply awful.

Agreed. FFX is not a good game for me. I like to finish the FF games I play, but I gave up because it was not a good story, characters were awful, battles were Meh, and just wasn't a fun game. I also gave up on FF9, I don't know why exactly... It didn't hold my interest...

I don't know why all the hate on FF8 though, I thought it was a good game, better than anything since at least. But as has been suggested, play them all. You will get a feel for the series and either like it or not.

BTW, my personal favorite is either FF4, or the original FF.

its awesome. thats why

The battle system of IX is way too slow. The battle system is too spimpel with no depth, and the Limit Breaks are the worst of the series.

Too slow? Well, compared to other FFs I guess.

No depth? And the other systems had depth? O_o FF IX battle system is basically all other FF's battle system with a few tweaks.

Limit breaks? There were none :P But they weren't all that bad. I remember Steiner being able to hit in the 6000s but when he was in Trance he was able to hit 9999s with a normal hit. Not exactly bad.

my Steiner was able to hit 9999 without trance so trance got pretty much useless and it just pales in comparison to lionheart and Omnislash. Those limits were just beastly!

someone said FF9 is crap ??
i have played 7,8,9,10 and 10-2
i gave away 7 and 8 because i didn't like it
10 and 10-2 the are great games and i love them

FF9 IS BY FAR THE BEST GAME MADE BY SQUARE(played the game over and over)

As far as the main series goes.

Play FF 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12 skip 2, 7,10 and 10pt.2

Spin offs are hit and miss. But I suggest 12 Revenant Wings on DS

along with FF: Tactics (original PS or PSP remake)and FF: Tactics A2 on DS.

Crisis Core FF7 on PSP is actually better then FF7 and is another strong suggestion.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

Hahahah! I believe Neos should answer this one! xD

they aren't. They are pure shit put in a large bottle, then pissed in it, puked in it, and then cooked. After that, you eat it. That's how final fantasy games are.

Hahahahahahaha!!!

My GOD... ah... good stuff.

1) FF6
2) FF7
3) FF8
4) FF9
5) FF10
6) FF10-2

Then go back and play FF3-4. And am sure there will be DS remake of 5 to play as well. And then you can try 12, but people have mixed thoughts on that one. I thought it was ok. FF6-9 were the best IMO

4 ≈ One

Final Fantasy 1-6 are a collection of games all to themselves and the beloved icons of the "old-school" fans of Final Fantasy. It is after these games that the first great schism in the franchise is recognized.

Final Fantasy 7 was really the last great hurrah, but remains equally controversial among gamers as to what its true worth is now that it has aged.

Final Fantasy 8-9 were unique follow ups but even despite a backlash towards the WTFness of 8, both held together as interesting additions to the franchise in hindsight. It is after these games that the second great schism in the franchise is recognized.

Final Fantasy 10 was the beginning of the streamlining and casual-ization of the series, from this point on the franchise would embrace a new style of androgynous character design, recycled character designs (basically Tidus & Yuna as the main characters in every game), glam frilly worlds and an over all sense of superficial, sometimes forced, Final Fantasy-ish ambience. 10 was a good game, but not a great game, it seemed in some respets more casual than the previous final fantasies however at the time it was forgiven as yet another unique contribution to the franchise, people did not yet know it would be the harbinger of things to come.

At this point Square began whoring out franchises and experimenting with sequels. Final Fantasy 10-2 graced us with charlie's angels girl power while we watched the international special edition of Final Fantasy 10 never get released here. In these duldrums they also started rehashing their most successful game, Final Fantasy 7 with a plethora of spin-offs that drew equal criticism from the fans.

Final Fantasy 11 was released with almost a hush whisper of befuddled anticipation, a Final Fantasy MMORPG that was numbered? The fans were outraged to be quite honest, rightly so. And even though it allegedly was a good game, its utter dependence on other (often uncooperative) players and utility of early online gaming handicapped the game's success and potential. All in all the only really long lasting contribution 11 has offered the franchise is a legacy of Mithra porn on the internet that continues strong until this day.

Final Fantasy 12 was released to much anticipation, especially given its roots in FFTA, and while the community tried to convince themselves it was a good game and tried to defend the controls and system, in about six months time there was no one left to kid themselves this was anything but an exercise in creating a game that played itself. The story, phenomenal, the characters, interesting, the problem, the characters (namely the two main starter characters) had about a much to do with the ongoing story and world around them as you the player outside of the game did. While gambits allowed the game to eventually play itself it at least gave you the option to take a nap while "playing" the game. As far as the fantasy aspect this could have passed for steam punk more than anything else given how hard they tried to keep the majority of races of FFTA basically out of the game. According to Square the merchandising disaster of FF9 prompted them to think no one liked anthropomorphic characters in their main series games and after FF11's mediocre reception they did everything they could to keep non-human characters out of FF12 as main or playable characters. Fran of course (of the viera, the most human of the races in FFTA) was kept as the token savage of the group and while FF12 did introduce new races in addition to those in FFTA they were all kept as extraneous to the main events and story of the game and your party as possible. While the reasons vary, everyone can at least agree the game was a dissapointment. Again, the special edition of this game was spared western audiences for reasons still unknown much like FF10 and the Kingdom Hearts games.

Final Fantasy 13 seems to be following up a dark downward trend though many fans still hold out hope for it. The peppering of the game throughout all the platforms via spin-offs and add-ons does cause worry for me, though there is really little else known about the title so far. The game of course continues on the stylized unchanging artistic trend of FF10-FF12 but the jury remains out on whether that will be a negative factor for this game or not.

All in all the series can be divided up as such...

Final Fantasy's "Old School" Golden Age

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy's "Mainstream Appeal" Golden Age

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy's Age of "Streamlining", Casual experimentation & Genre blurring.

Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X2
Final Fantasy VII-Dirge of Cerberus
Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy XII

Everyone seems to be giving different advice which is good and which are not. To b honest, I like all the FF games I've played. Compared to most other games even the worse of the main FF series games are better then those. Bad for a FF game in my view is still better then nearly all other games.

Here's some advice, try them all, work out for yourself which are good and which are not.

this.

If you really want to form an honest opinion you should always play them in order, as they were made.

If you don't mind sprites for some time, start with 6 and work your way up the ladder... then if you really want to, play the also great old stuff!

(but consider the release date for each game you play!)
