Why are the final fantasy games so good?

 Um, it IS fantastic.  It's easily one of the best FF's overall.

 

Final Fantasy X is probably one of the worst Final Fantasy games in the series.  Simply awful.

 

Agreed. FFX is not a good game for me. I like to finish the FF games I play, but I gave up because it was not a good story, characters were awful, battles were Meh, and just wasn't a fun game. I also gave up on FF9, I don't know why exactly... It didn't hold my interest...

I don't know why all the hate on FF8 though, I thought it was a good game, better than anything since at least. But as has been suggested, play them all. You will get a feel for the series and either like it or not.

BTW, my personal favorite is either FF4, or the original FF.
