Forums - Gaming - Why do people find it necessary to rant on about what console is better?

In the good old days of the amiga, amstrad, c64, people didnt car about what console is the greatest. As true lovers of video games, they wouldn't mind playing any console as long as they had good games to enjoy. However times have changed since then. Like football hooliganism, fanboys rant and go on and pollute cyberspace with loving chants and glory support for their console. Is life become so shallow that individuals must belong to a console for them to feel accepted in society?

I believe if one really is a an individual who appreciates video games, nor will he care what system succeeds nor will care what processor is more powerful. Every console to date, whether it has failed miserably or not has offered games that have been wonderful and offered hours of enjoyment and joy.

Consoles like the saturn and dreamcast which were born to fail had games like shenmue, crazi taxi, sonic adventure 1+2, metropolis street racer (now renamed project gotham racing). The Atari 64 had Alien vs predator. The Atari Lynx had Slime world and rygar, the mega CD had Ground Zero texas, Nightwatch9i think it was called this), Snatcher, Eternal Champions (the first game to have death moves including CG sequences of death moves), the 32x add on had Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter etc.

Since non of us actually get paid by sony, nintendo or MS what is the point in all the favoritism?

A gamer won't care what console does best, he will only care about what games are on offer. Those who have their fanboyism tendencies are not lovers of video games, they are lovers of the companies they side with. Since this site is about Video games made for people who enjoy their video games, why do we have and tolerate biased approaches and threads or even allwo such discussions to go on?

Why do we care who wins the Stanley Cup? At least with video games, there's the idea that the 'best' console gets the best games.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

nothing like a good rant on the intenet

Insecurity. They feel better about themselves if the console they bought is the one called "winner" (sells more0. Since Sony used to dominate, there´s a lot people really pissed off right now.

To be fully honest, I owned a PS1 and PS2 and have a 360. I want a PS3 and I honestly don´t care about the Wii (there´s a couple games I`m interested but not enpugh to consider getting one).

I don´t want Wii-mote. I like my games exactly as Sony have been doing. But I have no problem with the Wii winning. I think I would have a problem if nobody would make games for my console of choice anymore, but I don´t see that happening.

Not ranting on, just wanting to know what the reasons are from the various individuals. good research on how some people think ;)

It has been a while since consoles took significantly different directions, but in this generation they've done so. In fact, not only have they taken different directions, but each console vendor has loudly proclaimed a different vision of what gaming should be. Nintendo has stuck to an idea of gaming as fun entertainment for everyone. Sony embraces the idea of gaming as a sensory extravaganza. Microsoft espouses gaming as a hormonal rush for the hardcore. The catalogs of each console reflect this, and in at least two cases the technology behind each console is largely built around it.

This leads a lot of people to believe that their choice of console might say more about them as a person than mere brand loyalty, and to be honest, I'm not sure they're wrong. But people get sensitive about things like that, and so rants become inevitable.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Well the 360 crowd crow all over PS3 fans because Xbox was crushed previously and they can't resist enjoying the shoe being on the other foot (which is pretty poor form actually).

The Wii crowd hit on PS3 crowd as they see Sony as having unfairly and unjustly crushing Nintendo in previous gens (which is again pretty poor form as Nintendo's products simply weren't as popular and that's that)

The PS3 crowd lash out at everyone as they thought they were going to have an easy life in 1st place and occasionally dish it out to 360/Wii and instead they're faced with wondering why their console isn't dominating (which is actually slightly more understandable although the fact they were actually looking forward to lording it over everyone else was really poor form)

Those will all 3 consoles have too much money but are hopefully happy.

Those who argue due to insecurity about their purchase can only presumably be really insecure about their sexual prowess if they panic that much about a games console.

Luckily in all cases we're talking about a highly vocal minority but they do make a lot of noise.

I have a particularly large pair of internet earplugs handy in case PS3 ever does overtake 360 WW as I can only imagine the loud outpourings of anguish and gloating that will produce.

Also, what is the Stanley Cup?

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
