Forums - Gaming - JRPG's are overrated?!

Real time RPG's are fun. Turn based RPG's are so out dated.

Turn-Based RPG can be fun.  Ever played Chrono Trigger? Oh, Lot Odyssey is also pretty fun.

JRPG's are an acquired taste they are not for everyone. If you like action, shooters, fighters and racers. Slow and boring JRPG's with long drawn out stories are definitely not for you.

I do not like turn based JRPG's. I mainly like fast paced action/ racers/shooters. Maybe the odd WRPG.

If a game takes more than 20 hours to pass the campaign I get bored and there has to be things to kill. I usually skip the cutscenes and do not read the dialogue in the game.

Theer are so real time JRPG's out there but never got into it much. I will give FF XIII a go when it comes out. Lost Odyssey or any old turn based JRPG does not interest me. Graphics mean a lot to me.

BTW: I have never heard of Chrono Trigger. If it is older than three years than I am not interested. Graphics have changed a lot, only current games interest me or a few later PS2 games.

That is personally the biggest bull I ever heard.  People can like shooters, action games, and JRPGs including me.  For once, someone is critising games other than MGS for lengthy cutscenes.

CT was made in 1995. How did you not know anything about CT?  It is a very popular game.  You will only play games up to from 3 years ago?  You are a graphic whore.

most of the JRPG's is better than the WRPG's also know that  Dynasty Warriors is not a RPG.

I like turn-based battle systems because most all action-based battle systems are clunky with poor cameras and even worse controls.

I'd rather an action game with RPG elements than an RPG with action elements.

JRPG is perhaps my favourite genre.

These are my reasons.

A game NEEDS strategy. Nothing comes close to JRPGs in strategy.

Games need awesome music. That sets mood, and mood is very important to me. JRPGs usually skip having some stupid singer sing, and I prefer music with rhytm.

Story. Games with a bad story need to be awesome to be good. Being a great game is next to impossible, for me, no other company than Nintendo has done that. The way they do that, is by not focusing on story. If you focus on story, it has to rock. Nothing beats JRPGs on story.

Character design. You have to like the character, get into the role character, or have a totally weird character. It has to be one of those, and preferably, all the roles should be taken by different characters. JRPGs have the best character design.

A reason to fight, both for you and your character. Why do you have to kill that guy? And no, just because he's there isn't enough. You also need a reason for yourself to fight, such as leveling. Without that, repetiveness gets even worse.

So you hate Star Ocean, Tales and Kingdom Hearts?  I like that developers are putting RPG elements in some of their games.  It seems that people seem to like to play games with RPG elements even if they don't like RPGs.

JRPGs are over rated. Especially modern JRPGs. However, that doesn`t mean your taste in games is any better.

I have played dozens of JRPGs last generation and even so I can count the good ones in a single hand. For every masterpiece there were 7 games that should not be made at all.
