Forums - Gaming - Todd Holmdahl talks about 360 failure rates

@Bodhesatva

You are really taking that "people love the box" thing out of hand. I already saw you post it on another thread.

Make that your new sign Bodhesatva. "The vast majority of people love the box".

OriGin,
I'm the the same boat with you on this.

Personally, the biggest thing that turns me off about the 360 is it's absurd failure rate. Every person I know who owns a 360 has had to return it to M$ to have it repaired.

I know quite a few people with Xboxs as it seems to be the main console of choice where I'm at.

I've had a horrible time with Sony's PS2 in the past -some of you might have read about my three PS2's- yet I'm quite surpised at the stability of the PS3 so far, and that is only been highlighted to the asinine problems with 360.

The fact that MS is not willing to dispel the sometimes ridiculous, overbloated claims and hypothosized percentages ( I've personally seen upwards to 80% on anti-M$ blogs >_
The gaming community is one of the very few places I've seen in which a large portion of people will buy high priced goods that faill, yet still remain adamantly supportive of that product. I'm telling you, cognitive dissonance plays a huge factor here guys.

But for a visualization, can you imagine people buying lemon cars and sticking by them simply because they like them or find them cool?

I was hoping that at least with the Elite, that many of the major issues with the 360 would have been solved. I don't have any raw data, but there seems to be too many reports of the red lights of death, disk scratching and alike to have had any real problems solved.

Seems to me MS has done itself something good through all this, anyone who buys a used 360 at this point is an idiot, as it's like purchasing an un-insured piece of shit. At least you get a "free" year of repairs when you buy a new Xbox.

I think it's hilarious. People pose serious questions that a large portion of the Xbox community is concerned with, and the response form an official is: "The vast majority of people love the box."

It reminds me of a Saturday Night Live skit about the 90 foot tall President: Reagan was apparently hit by a nuclear fall out and has grown to amazing size. The reporters are asking the White House press crew how the President is faring.

Journalist: "Is the President 150 feet tall?"

Press Secretary: "That's absolutely outrageous! A preposterous claim!"

Another Journalist: "Is he 100 feet tall?"

Secretary: "Absurd! We completely deny such charges!"

Yet Another Journalist: "Is he 90 feet tall?"

Secretary: "No comment."

Seriously some current affairs shows should start doing stories.

Who says the 65nm 360 will be any better ? its not liek they have said that swiching to smaller chips will solve the issue.

You should look it up then.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

It's good to see the Iraqi Defense Minister has found new work.

Best line of the day.

Is there ANY way to find a solid source about the failure rate? Or, you know, " The vast majority of people love the box" might be the new meme around here.

Reminds me of the SNL skit about the dick in a box...

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I'll help.  the problem with 360's is that components over heat, the gpu is often involved.  smaller chips are useful for two reasons.  they are smaller so they get the same amount of power in a smaller space meaning better efficiency (less energy used), with energy equating to heat.  the other reason is the size itself.  on chips the electricity moves from place to place.  since they arent superconductors some electricityis lost.  the lost electricity is energy which turns into heat. on smaller chips they travel less so less is lost (often on the scale of 100-1000 times less).

on a side note, when they shrink the chips they change the chip.  the changes usually result in more reliable and effiecient chips.  companies need to compete so when they change a chip they make it better.  this should still aply to the 360 since it means more reliable hardware and less worries for ms.

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

My Xbox 360 died, before the extention of the warranties, it had nothing to do with how I treated it. Even if it did though, there is a certain amount of punishment a system should be able to take. Laptops and Game consoles should be tested for this type of thing before they are sold. I think this is part of the reason we are seeing no growth even though the X360 library is so much better than than the PS3.  There are so many good games out but it's too expensive and people are afraid of buying it.  I think they will adress it as "improved durability" of the 65nm version when it comes out and a price drop.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
