Forums - Sony - Sony PS3 catching up to Wii in Japanese sales

if you look at the way it was for the PS2 it really didn't take off in sales either in Japan or worldwide until it dropped to the 199 price point (which, given inflation, is probably about 250 today). Of course the Wii, being very cheap to produce started at that price and so has a lot more sales. Yes, some only want a Wii and would never buy anything not Nintendo but as Gamecube vs PS2 (or N64 vs PS1) sales show thats a decided minority.

The Wii is outselling the PS3 for two reasons, first in much of the world its about half the price (if you look at actual dollars of product sold instead of number of consoles sold its pretty close to dead even) and second many of the Japan sellers have been delayed for years upon years (most importantly FFXIII, that or a new Dragon Quest game would immediately work wonders on the sales gap) If you think that the world is all fine with kids games and bad graphics thats just not the reality, if it was the Gamecube and N64 would have won; Sony made a far larger then ever before investment in technology (the PS2 was able to hit 299 at release and 199 within a year and some change) and so is having a much harder time with price then it has in the past. If, when the PS3 slims down and hits a 250 price point its still behind the Wii I'd be very surprised.

I mean even you Wii fanboy types have to admit that the fact millions of people are willing to pony up twice the cash for a PS3 (almost 3 times the cash at launch) says something about the market for a high quality console existing. I don't really begrudge you your fanboyism, I used to be a Nintendo Fanboy, would taunt Genesis owners endlessly with my "superior" SNES and even got an N64 instead of the PS1....then of course I played Final Fantasy VII when it came out and from that day on I never for even a second understood why anyone would pick Nintendo systems over cutting edge games like that ever again. Maybe a lot of you Wii fans are kids and weren't old enough in 97 to remember just how much better FFVII was then any console game that had ever been made up to that point and so never had the full conversion, but I have to say, once you find an HD game you like, you'll never go back to full time kid stuff again (unless you can't afford the HD console of course)

this has to be one of the most ridiculous posts I've ever seen. I'll just pick a few things to insult and let others pick at the corpse.

Firstly, the GC was an impressive feat of engineering, much more powerful than the PS2 and a third of the size, not to mention about the same power as the Xbox and it was tiny compared to it. The N64 was also more powerful than the PS1. Neither the PS1 nor PS2 were impressive engineering feats at all, and the PS3 isn't really either.

Secondly, Final Fantasy VII was in no way cutting edge. Maybe cutting edge boredom. Maybe I pick Nintendo systems over "cutting edge" games like this because I prefer them? Hey everyone has their tastes, and you might enjoy watching cutscenes, but I'll play my "kiddie" games any day of the week (for the record, I owned a PS1 and no N64)

And thirdly, you need to check the definition of "kiddie" because I see much more young kids wanting to play GTA and MGS than I see wanting to play Mario and Zelda. I've played some HD games, and you know what? I don't care. Clearly most people don't either. And for the record, yes I can afford a PS3 if I want.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

Completely wrong. The PS2 was supply constrained for almost a year in Japan alone.

Of course the Wii, being very cheap to produce started at that price and so has a lot more sales. Yes, some only want a Wii and would never buy anything not Nintendo but as Gamecube vs PS2 (or N64 vs PS1) sales show thats a decided minority.

It might surprise someone you, but most people don't give a sh*t about the brand. People buy it as a games platform. The games decide what people buy, only fanboys buy a console for the brand.

PS3 has seen already quite a few titles that were in PS2's top 20 lifetime. Dynasty Warriors, Everybody Golf, Winning Eleven and also Metal Gear Solid, Yakuza, Devil May Cry, Gundam, . Sure: Final Fantasy is bigger, but there are more proven franchises on PS3 than on Wii in Japan. Please note that in Japan the PS3 is pretty cheap and WiiSports is not bundled.
The Japanese just aren't very interested in the PS3. FF will give a boost, but nothing that will bring it close to the Wii. The gap will be 6 million by the end of 2008. The fact that WiiFit sold more than the PS3 already completely debunks your theory, as a Wii+ WiFit is about as expensive as a PS3.

If you think that the world is all fine with kids games and bad graphics thats just not the reality, if it was the Gamecube and N64 would have won; Sony made a far larger then ever before investment in technology (the PS2 was able to hit 299 at release and 199 within a year and some change) and so is having a much harder time with price then it has in the past. The kids games were on PS1 and PS2. These games always go to the winning console, hence the shovelware on Wii. If you mean that Zelda, Mario, Goldeneye, Eternal Darkness  etc are only for kids there's something wrong with you.
Besides N64 was a lot more powerful than PS1 and Gamecube was stronger than PS2, so really you completely don't have a clue what's going on.

Sorry, but calling FFVII the cutting edge of gaming while calling all Nintendo games inferior is just stupid. It's an amazing game and I love it, but it was not cutting edge. Certainly not comparable to Mario 64, GoldenEye and Ocarina of Time that released in the same generation.

In short: the next time you spend your time on writing such an epic piece, you might as well spend some time checking the facts.
