Nah they only had the second generation, first generation didn't include them and the third generation was dominated by the NES. Though they did fuck it up in a way bigger than any of the current console makers could achieve, even bigger than SEGA did.

Don't believe everything in Wikipedia.
First of all, Pong was Atari in the first generation. As was Atari Video Pinball and some other units.
Second of all, what is listed as the second generation included two very distinct generations: the early early 8 bit games and the later early 8 bit games. Basically, the Atari 2600 competed against the early early machines as well as the Mattel Intellivision and Magnovox Odyseey 2. The first two (2600 and Intellivision) were still players when the later early machines -- the Colecovision (by Coleco) and the Atari 5200 were released. Interestingly, all four could play Atari 2600 games -- the latter three by add-on hardware. (Coleco also had an Atari 2600 clone called the Gemini).
Atari had a third-generation machine -- the Atari 7800 -- that would have been competitive had not been pulled from its original release 1984 release. (It was re-released in 1986).
