Mushroom Men Growth Report
We delve into the Men's back story.
by Daemon Hatfield

June 30, 2008 - Developer Red Fly has been hard at work tweaking Mushroom Men: Rise of the fungi, taking into account feedback it's been getting from focus groups. After our last play test we reported that the different unit types were serving as the game's difficulty levels. Playing the game as the Heavy, Sage, or Scout would result in easy, medium, or hard settings, respectively. But apparently, the consensus has been that people want to be able to choose a unit separate from the difficulty, and maybe play with the heavy on hard. Now we can, as Red Fly has unlocked the units from these settings.

The cause of these mushrooms springing to life is a meteor that crashed on Earth and spewed green space dust into the air. This dust has various effects on different life forms. While it made mushrooms sentient, it mutated and corrupted some insects and animals. The story unfolds over the DS and Wii versions of Mushroom Men, each telling a different part of the tale. The DS game will arrive first and set the stage for the Wii edition.

Gameplay is a mix of platforming, combat, and light puzzle-solving.
Rise of the Fungi follows the early development of the mushroom nations. The player follows them as they learn to walk, communicate, and explore their world. Different mushroom empires are formed, each staking their territory and developing their culture. The Bolete Tribe and the Morels thrive in isolation. The elitist Amanitas Empire trains forces it plans to use to crush the other tribes. They steal the resources of their enemies, leading to the Wii's Spore Wars.

Players begin Rise of the Fungi as a Bolete, discovering how to live off the land. At first they will battle the environment -- until the Amanitas arrive. Then they must confront their mushroom brethren.

Well, look who's come crawling back.
The fungi will rise in October.
