Forums - Sales - Screen Digest: 112 million Nintendo DS Units and 67 million PSPs to be sold

The PSP is not hitting 67 million. That would put it on close to LTD with the GBA, and that just won't happen. I think if the PSP redesign makes a strong showing and really improves some of the PSPs weaker points I can see it selling 40 million, maybe even pushing 50 million, but definetly not 60. On the flip side 112 million is probably low for the DS. The DS will have price cuts, new colors, and possible another redesign down the road, and those will keeps sales amazing. I just don't see under 120 million for the system.

"Ha!" if this is enough to set of your flame-detector you might be wrapped to tight, or I just didn´t get the fine nuances of his flame, the smiley face with its tounge out is there to show all us little DS girls whats what.

I think you guys are wrong. I own a PSP now when I never thought I'd buy one before. The price cut and the upcoming God of War game made the difference for me, and, now that I'm actually using one, I find out that it is great. The UMD drive could be a lot faster for some games, but it sounds like that might be addressed with the redesign. There are PS2 ports - though the Grand Theft Autos were actually ported to the PS2 and not the other way around - (just as there are ports on the DS, btw: Mario64, Final Fantasy III, etc.), but, in the coming months, there is no longer a PS2 to port from. There are a lot of original games now, and they are only going to grow in number. Right now, I am playing Dungeon Siege, and I am hooked on it as much as I was hooked on Castlevania on the DS. I don't think the PSP will catch the DS because the DS has a wider demographic, as the stats show (I am a bit surprised by the number of females who own PSP's though...higher than I expected), but it is still a great little machine. No one said you could only buy one portable.

It's great that you like your PSP but aside from the fact that you like it do you have any reason to say everyone else is wrong for saying the PSP won't come near 67 million in sales?  As I said in my last post just check out the sales charts on this website. The PSP's sales are on a downward trend even after the recent price cut and all the good to great games it has.  It is very very unlikely that the PSP's sales will suddenly almost triple over the next 3 years to reach 67 million.  That's not to say gamers shouldn't like the PSP, if you do then have fun but don't expect that to deliver sales.

I was using myself as an example. I did my thing already for Nintendo, buying up two DS's and contributing to their success. If I could be moved to buy a PSP, a whole lot of other people can be as well. I think, with the higher cost of home console gaming, portable gaming is going to be big. That is what I see going on in Japan. There is going to be a much bigger pie for portables (at the expense of home consoling) and not everyone is going to be satisfied with the cartoony games of the DS. Not that there's anything wrong with cartoony games, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. They aren't the same kind of systems, and they appeal to different groups. There is no reason why they can't coexist.

@JSF
Gotcha. I would just say I think sales show fewer people copying you but who knows. As I've said we'll get a better idea where things are heading this Christmas so you could be right. I don't think anyone disputes that the PSP and DS can co-exist. The Game Gears problem was that when it took 20% of the handheld market that only equaled less than 11 million sales. Today 20% for the PSP probably means 30-35 million which is more than enough to survive. That's almost double the Gamecube's sales after all. That is if the PSP can start selling games of course.

Some interesting stats.

DS owners (EUR) - 54% female and 46% male
PSP owners (EUR) - 40% female and 60% male

DS owners (EUR) - 52% under the age of 15 and 48% 15 or older
PSP owners (EUR) - 28% under the age of 15 and 72% 15 or older

Ha!

46% male out of 13.96 million equals 6.42 million compared to 60% of 7.80 million equal to 4.68? 48% over 15 of 13.96 million equals 6.70 million 72% of 7.80 million equals 5.62 million? You sell to numbers not percentages.

LOL, kber took a cheap shot without thinking it true.  In fact, what this proves is exactly what everyone has said forever.  The DS appeals to ALL markets, not just the kids, and appeals to ALL markets (including adults) better than the PSP.

I doubt PSP will sale close to 70 million. It's slowly and slowly dying even now. I see somewhere around a 45 million finish.

But those stats really show DS as being very level on everything which is good cause in the world there are slightly more women than men. Meaning those stats really fit perfectly to what it should be.

It's pretty funny to see people trying to prove a point, yet prove the opposite. So PWNED!

I agree with everyone else that 67 million is way too high for PSP and 112 million is too low for DS. The current 2:1 lead DS enjoys is increasing week to week, and could be 3:1 in 3 years time.

I hope these analysts can pat themselves on the back for figuring out that Nintendogs and Brain Training were important, even though they can't extrapolate current sales trends, aren't aware of the strong precedent for a leading console continually increasing its level of dominance throughout the middle of the cycle, and think Animal Crossing is a third party game.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

PSP best years are still yet to come, a redesign then the magic price of $99 and then there are the big games that are coming like Gow FFCC and sooner or later Gran Turismo.
