Forums - Nintendo - Wii sales are not driven by games

I agree with the topic somewhat.

It sure isn't games alone that are driving sales as Gamecube and N64 proved that Ninty games alone aren't enough to capture sales that wii is getting these days...especially during n64 days which had a much superior lineup of games than Wii thanks to RARE.

But I don't think its peripherals alone. Price, marketing, trying wii sports at friends place as well as peripherals...they all have something to do with the success of the wii.

Actually I seriously agree, when you look at it all that wii reallly has is mario galaxy and super smash bros.

Everything else isnt that good and is on another console. If you look at it the wii has the worst games this gen so far, and its selling the best. It was completely different with the ps1 and ps2, since they had the best games of there time.

Strange..

Help me leo-j.  I am in dire need of some good wholesome Fire Emblem.  Give me some PS360 Fire Emblem goodness!  ^_^

It's a combination of all the elements, Wii controller + Wii Sports = Win.

Did you just say that all the wii has is galaxy and ssbb? Here are a few many other games that sell the console.

Hardcore games

MP3

Mkwii(considered both hardcore and casual)

LoZ Tp (sold more on wii than GC)

Super Paper Mario

Fire Emblem(for some)

Casuals

Mkwii

Wii Sports

Wii Play

Wii Fit

Link's Crossbow Training

Wario Ware

ANd those are only nintendo games. Now the games might not be as good, but to some they are better(casuals).

I could probably name a few from third parties too.

Edit: Also there are many smaller games that could justify a purchase of a system.

Why do you think it is that way? Have you also noticed purple goombas flying out of your sphincter?

Thsy are basing on numbers and using them to put some F.U.D. against the Wii amongst western developers, who rae backing up more the HD systems but seem to be persuaded by the Wii's growing installed base.

Many Wii-hating sites used these kind of information to try and stop Nintendo. They fear that they will make gaming "retarded".

This is ridiculous. What is the point of buying controllers, if not for the games?

You CAN argue that some sales of WiiFit came people buying Wii Balance board... for later. But they could have held off - it may eventually get bundled with something else - we never know.

And yes, I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one more peripheral released for the Wii - each one is extending and building on the concept of what the Wii is about.

And no, I don't see the Wii sales being that affected by sales of "Wiimote" rip-offs for other consoles. For starters, its the games that matter - and since the other controllers have to start from an install base of 0 again - this affects what games will go out on a limb to support them. History has shown that peripherals that come later in a consoles life fail.

...but by peripherals. Apart from the Nintendo faithful who have stuck it out through the 'hard times' in the Playstation era, the new generation of non-gamers are buying the Wii specifically for the controller, whether it's the Wii Fit board or the Wii-mote.

This I think is about half-true. The people who buy the Wii buys it for the experience, not the way it's controlled. You do not buy the machine, you buy the job the machine does, the experience it gives you and what you use it for. The peripherals are an integral part of Nintendo's strategy, but not the only part. Games are really important too, and I think that Wii would have been last in the race right now if it hadn't been for Wii Sports.

For that reason, do you think it's possible that Nintendo will announce more peripherals at E3 and in the future? Also, do you think it's possible the Wii's sales will be cut down by the introduction of Sony and Microsoft's waggle-motes when they reach a similar price-point to the Wii?

Yes. The likelyhood of Nintendo announcing new peripherals at E3 is really high.

No, unless Microsoft and Sony can promote their consoles in such a way that the percieved experience gotten from their console is the same as Nintendo's the Wii sales will continue unabated. And never forget that people do not buy things because they are cheap, people buy things because they WANT them. Price is essentially just a barrier STOPPING people from buying what they want.

Your argument is not quite so full of holes as people here seem to think. The main reasoning is valid, but not complete.

This is invisible text!

@Leo-J: When you look at it, there's quite a few other games that caliber, or near, but mostly all of them 1st party.
And another thing is, that PSX and PS2 were the shovelware machines of their gens. It's not having the best games, as N64 shows, nor just having the most games, but having most games with a couple of big hitters.
