Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS3 vs 360 top sellers

Data seems to suggest that on average PS3 owners and 360 owners buy about the same amount of games per user per year. Microsoft's hype with regard to attach rates compared to the PS3 isn't very useful for comparison purposes as the 360 had a 1 year or more headstart, also if your console sells more in recent time this should drag down the average attach rate comparatively for such a console as the average new user will not buy as many games day 1 as a longer period average attach ratio per console. New users will expand their games library in course of time.

Below is a listing of both platforms top selling games (please politely correct any mistakes):

Comparing the top 25 for both platforms:

PS3:

1) Grand Theft Auto IV
2) Motorstorm
3) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
4) Resistance: Fall of Man
5) Assassins Creed
6) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
7) Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
8) Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
9) Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
10) FIFA 08
11) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
12) Need for Speed: ProStreet
13) Devil May Cry 4
14) Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
15) Heavenly Sword
16) WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008
17) Burnout Paradise
18) Rockband
19) Army of Two
20) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
21) Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
22) Dynasty Warriors 6
23) Singstar
24) Dynasty Warriors Gundam
25) Warhawk

10 exclusives which are very unlikely to ever become available on the 360

360:

1) Halo 3
2) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
3) Grand Theft Auto IV
*4) Gears Of War
5) Forza Motorsport 2
6) Assassins Creed
7) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
8) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
9) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
10) Madden NFL 08
11) Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
12) Guitar Hero II
13) Tom Clancy Rainbow Six: Vegas
14) Call of Duty 3
*15) Call of Duty 2
*16) Mass Effect
17) Madden NFL 07
*18) Bioshock
19) Saints Row
20) Fight Night Round 3
21) Dead Rising
22) Rock Band
23) Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
24) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
25) Crackdown

9 of the games are currently not available on the PS3.

* Notice regarding these 360 "exclusives" Gears of War, Call of Duty 2, Bioshock and Mass Effect are also available for Windows and BioShock is coming to the PS3. Although I counted Call of Duty 2 as a 360 exclusive it's old with COD3 and COD4 already on the market.

Conclusion: The PS3 has just as many top games as the 360 has, despite the 360's one year headstart. IMO 360 fans claiming the PS3 has no games should be left ignored.

take Bioshock of your "games are currently not available on the PS3"

consider the Sony's list consisted of "10 exclusives which are very unlikely to ever become available on the 360"

if you are going to compare, compare them with the same standard.

other than that minor detail, good list. I still say 360 has better game list, but that's what 1 extra year will do for a system.

haha 10 of those PS3-games did not even sell a million units, while the 360 has 16 further millionsellers besides those you listed. 4 of these further millionsellers are 360-exclusive.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

take Bioshock of your "games are currently not available on the PS3"

I clarified this in the notice underneath. I agree, but at this point BioShock isn't yet available for the PS3.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Umm... this list has no bearing on the quality of the games on each console... Although you are right, attach rates are the same for all 3 consoles.

yeah, but under the PS3's bolded list, you stated "10 exclusives which are very unlikely to ever become available on the 360"

All I'm saying is... use the SAME standard in both lists.

Like clarified in the original post, the 360 had a one year headstart. This resulted into an install base advantage when the PS3 launched and when games were released. But on average a PS3 owner buys about just as many games per year.

For example what this means, if both the average PS3 owner and 360 owner buys 4.7 games per year, if 360 console owners from 2005 bought a 360 they would own 9.4 games on average by 2007. PS3 owners from 2006 will own 4.7 games on average by 2007.

Understand?

IMO I couldn't as there are many unknown factors. For example Mass Effect may someday hit the PS3 platform, as it's based on an older middleware Unreal engine, a PS3 port should technically be easy to accomplish (with better results, less pop-in issues and no need for mandatory cutscenes to cover up loading times). But like BioShock a PS3 port has been denied.

PS3 vs 360 sales

The Xbox360 has a larger proportion of better sellers. Its top 5 sold 29 million vs 17 million on the PS3 and that has pushed a lot of good games out of the top 25 list. All of those games are Million sellers on the 360 while only 15 on the PS3 list are.

Your list is flawed because it conveniently ignores 16 million sellers on the Xbox360 side and elevates a lot of PS3 games into a seemingly higher position. Army of two and Dynasty warriors aren't considered brilliant games.

The metric that counts? 12 games 90+ metacritic vs 6 and something like 120 80+ games vs about 70.

Tease.

Software Totals:

Console Weekly Total Tie Ratio
1,079,625 (+12%) 75,844,534 6.15
1,000,621 (-3%) 100,032,193 4.25
844,663 (-17%) 106,653,529 9.06
616,287 (-42%) 33,090,545 6.41
346,634 (-13%) n/a n/a
242,809 (-4%) 51,282,013 3.96
Total 4,130,639

tie ratio means average games per console, right? If the average PS3 owner buys as much software as the average 360 owner, why is there such a big difference? I am asking seriously! No trolling here
