Alan Wake's is a place holder...  It may ship this year or next.  Also, the games dated on the first of the month are placeholders for shipping sometime within that month.

Your dad's not alone! My 55 year old dad (I think. It's somewhere around that. Yes, shame on me indeed) loves CoD 4 as well and recently asked me for some similar recommendations.

He sucks at it (tends to let the computer squad do the killing but claims the credit nonetheless -_-) and sometimes needs me to help him out on the tough missions but he is getting better. He's actually enjoyed a lot of games this generation, his favourites are:

CoD4.
Motorstorm.
Super Mario Galaxy.
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (he's played this for hundreds of hours).

Yeah, it's kind of odd, but I'd define my dad as a half-gamer. He absolutely LOVES war FPS games. He doesn't play much (as we've tried to get him to learn how to play games, but he claims he doesn't have the coordination for it), so he really enjoys watching my twin brother and I play various war FPSes, and tells us what to do. I don't know if I've ever seen him as excited as I did when he watched "Death From Above" on COD4 (greatest level of all time)

Right now, I got:

  • Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
  • Tom Clancy's Endwar (not a FPS/TPS, but I think he'll enjoy it)
  • World in Conflict (")
  • Call of Duty 5

And I'm sure I'll get a few more. At some point, I might get him a Wii in hopes that the controller might get him to play it more, ala machina-AX, but there's not a huge boon of FPS games on the system (yet).

And to totally turn this thread upside down - if I ever bought a Wii, what current War FPSes or similar, are out there? Again, no Sci-Fi ones (aside from Red Steel, he might like that )...I had:

  • Red Steel
  • Call of Duty 3
  • Call of Duty 5
  • Medal of Honor

For that list. Any others that might be good for a 60 year old?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

@mrstickball: If you plan on buying any MoH for Wii, buy Heroes 2, don't buy Vanguard.

Also there's some rumors about Red Steel 2 + Brother in Arms: Double Time (Port from the PS2 game) but seeing that they are Ubisoft games for the Wii, I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, not even my worst enemy.

Edit: FarCry Vengeance is available for the Wii too and its made by Ubisoft. Please dont even rent the game, it will crash your Wii. Its the worst game on the Wii so far.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Warhound is a graphically advanced FPS from the makers of Call of Juarez. It should come out in the 4th quarter.

Anyone care to put up a list of major, and minor ones this year? My dad was asking me about this earlier - if there were any post-WW2 ones coming out that weren't Gears of War 2.

And yes, I crap you not, my 60 year old dad was the one asking me this. He's looking for reality-based ones, and not sci-fi (so primarily COD4 type, and preferably based on actual conflicts like 'nam and the Iraq war).

Heres a link to brothers in arms hells highway

Thats a hard one really, why not put him onto some older but good titles as well? Look to the past as well as the future. My dad still plays FPS games at the age of 67 so I win!

On a side note, he might enjoy games like Jagged Alliance 2 as its an awesome game with brilliant mechanics and gameply. You should also check out the back catalogue of compatible games from the original Xbox as well.

Have you tried him on Halo? It seems like quite an entry level game it'll make him feel good without handing him his ass on the easier difficulty levels. Yea I know its Sci-fi and all, but hey gotta broaden his horizens now.

There are a few realistic/difficult games on the PC that play really well such as Delta force and Viet Cong that deal with real conflicts. I think you'll have more luck there if he can use the PC controls?
