Forums - Gaming - It begins the creator of GEARS OF WAR calls MGS4 " passive entertainment"

Is it really so bad? The man is allowed not to like MGS4 or not make games like it.

I hardly think Kojima himself would take much offense to this comment. There isn't that much insulting about the comment. He is right, a lot of MGS4 is passive. I have to agree with Goddbless here. Relax

I guess it's passive in the sense of 45 minute cutscenes. I mean, why so long? I can go and watch the typical sit-com episode with that amount of time. They ought to stick to just using short cutscenes and more action.

Who could have predicted that Sony fans would be pissed at an attack on a PS3 exclusive and 360 fans would defend the guy responsible for a 360 exclusive.

This thread = predictable.

I do agree that this guy should just shut his trap and work on his game.

 What he said :D

Although it is rare for me to agree with Cliffy B. I do agree with him here (although he said it in a kind of douche bag way) ... The fact is that the way Metal Gear Solid tells its story is inflexable and passive, and is (potentially) outdated when you compare it with other games like Half-Life or Bioshock.

HL has just about no story, its some sort of fetch quest game with 5mins of dialogue repeated for the entire series. It also has the worst driving in any game since the NES. Bioshock has just about no story with lots of fetch quests, it was a great idea, but was turned into a bad thing.

I don't know what game you're playing, but there is absolutely no driving in Half Life ... The story was brilliant for the time when it was released because it gives you the experience of being trapped in the Black-Mesa facility, and was the first cinematic game that didn't involve cut scenes.

Once again, I don't know what game you were playing but Bioshock had a pretty good story. The reason I choose Bioshock was because of the method it told the story was fairly good (through the use of diary-audio tapes which provided a mood for the game) and the fact that it approached issues without the need for a 20 Minute cut scene.

DTGs post demonstrates the problem with Metal gear more than anything else, a long conversation filled with really stupid filler in order to try to say something that could be summed up in a paragraph.

Stupid filler? That conversation is filled with profound ideas about society, the nature of truth, identity, free will vs determinism and others. Just because you and others disagree with the content of it or simply do not wish to understand it doesn't designate it "stupid filler" unless you call the works of Immanual Kant merely stupid filler as well.

Well, I think Gears of War is the most overrated game of this generation this far.

Incredibly average gameplay and boring (although pretty) environments

DTG how was that complicated or philosphical? It was long and easy to understand... and could of been expressed a lot quicker and a lot through scenes in the game rather then words so the player could get it while playing rather then have the game suggest you are an idiot and need to spell it out for you.

Most of the stuff in there is pretty obvious everyday stuff.

Seriously though, Cliff B probably didn't mean anything buy it.  He's just a douchebag so everything he says sounds like he's being a douchebag even when it's a nuetral point.

Or even a compliment.

If Passive means slow pace, I kind of agree.
That is why it is a Tactical Espionage Action game.

I think he means watching the game instead of playing it.

errr...Immanuel...that for the record could feel rightfully offended by such a comparison.

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

Well, his comment worked as it generated a 4 page thread on VGChartz.
