Actually, a little voice in my head keeps telling me that there's one thing that'll make Diamond/Pearl much more successful in the long term than any Pokemon title before it: online play.
A lot of older people play Pokemon now, but it's still perceived somewhat as a "kid's" game. A lot of older players might feel embarrased trying to play it in public, and so didn't bother to buy previous generations as they grew up. Online play not only solves that problem, but it allows people who know each other to play one another from huge distances.
As this catches on I think you're going to see the "older set" driving sales of Pokemon more and more. Online play is the holy grail that I know a lot of people have been wanting for years.
