MGS2 sold between 300k and 600k in UK (it recieved Platinium ELSPA award but not Double Platinium), vgchartz estimates MGS2 sales at 2.42 mln, this means UK sales were only 12-25% of all Others MGS4 sales.

MGS3 sold between 200k and 300k in UK (it recieved Gold ELSPA award but not Platinium), vgchartz gives MGS3 1.7 mln in Others. So UK made up only 12-18% of Others MGS3 sales.

This shows that UK isn't best market for MGS4 and expecting (for example) 6 times more sales for all Others than in UK isn't unreasonable.

Excellent first week sales for Konami!

I seriously doubt that, espescially since we know it only sold 120k first week in the UK (the biggest market in Europe)


Yes, but still a small minority of the European gaming market in total. Are those first week figures for the UK, or first 2 day sales? For some reason though it seems MGS4 has relatively little impact on PS3 hardware sales for the UK compared to other markets.

The press release starts like this:

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced that sales of its newly-released Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots title for PLAYSTATION®3 have exceeded one million units within the first week.

Konami has shipped over one million copies of the game to retailers across Europe to meet the exceptional demand, with high sales confirmed in all European territories and securing the Number One position in the relevant sales charts.


This is getting very confusing, as usual with PR people. Is the game sold out in many stores? If it was, I'd believe that one million units might have been sold. When they say "over one million" I usually assume "1 million and a little more".

while the UK-videogame-market might make up close to 1/3rd of the whole european market, that percentage doesn't have to be true for the european PS3 market or MGS sales

It's not confusing at all, Konami sold over 1 million units of MGS4 for Europe. How many copies retailers have sold to consumers the tracking firms will have to determine.

Konami made the announcement.

We can however assume that MGS4 sales to consumers for Europe will easily top 1 million in the near future.
