Forums - Sony - KZ2 technical director:we have got some help from insomniac and GOW studio

More details from the guy that wrote the KZU article from the PlayStation.com forums:

Templar is now a Colonel and commands a Cruiser called New Sun. :smileyhappy: There's also a small profile for each member of the Legion.

Cpl. Dante Garza (sharpshooter/technician)

Master Sgt. Rico Valasquez (he's also been promoted)

Sgt. Tomas Sevchenko (Sev)

Cpl. Shawn Natko (heavy duty/explosives man)

It's a little too much for me to type. Oh and there's also a few new screenshots including some images of the new ISA and Helghast tanks.

[...]

Here's a couple of other interesting quotes:

"The Arc Cannon, a huge beam that harnesses the power of Helghan's apocolyptic thunderstoms. We hear there are more weather weapons too..."

"Since all the screens here hail from one level, don't expect the entire game to look so ... bleak. Some levels will highlight the "natural beauty" of Helghan "

[...]

Fairly positive. Shane goes into explaining what happened with the first game in terms of hype, sales and story. The closing paragraph he reiterate on how Killzone 2 needs to be judged by it's own merits. Guerrilla hopes that gamers AND the media move beyond the "Halo Killer" title and see the game for what it is.

And the bigger news that we can take form this: the God of War teams is well under way on ps3 development, so much so that they are now assisting other teams! :D

God of War 3 will definitely be revealed at E3!

did seriously no one else notice this?  the devs have to be pretty far to help the kz2 guys who are presumidly bug testing, balancing, policing, and tweaking at this point.

my pillars of gaming: kh, naughty dog, insomniac, ssb, gow, ff

i officially boycott boycotts.  crap.

I bet they have about the same amount done as the guys who are working on the Getaway3 and 8days

"The magazine features 12 pages of Killzone 2 goodness, some of which mentions that four-and-a-half of the six cores of the PS3’s Cell chip are being used by Killzone 2 at the moment. Guerrilla Games’ Technical Directer, Michiel van der Leeuw also mentions, “Sony basically has an international forum for sharing character technology, animation tools and graphics shaders. ~ We’ve even taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we’ve even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica.”

Very interesting, perhaps there is much more room for improvement in PS3 games than people think. I mean if KZ2, said to be one of the best looking games so far isn't using 2 cores....

Now is it talking the PPE 4 SPEs or the PPE and 3 SPEs?

There is 1 PPU and 8 SPUs on every Cell processor.  However, one of the SPUs has been disabled to improve yield rates and one SPU is dedicated to the OS.  This leaves 6 SPUs, thus 4 1/2 of the 6 SPUs are being used by KZ2 in addition to the PPU.

From what I understand the AI and a few other things are being run on the PPU, while the physics, etc. is being done on the SPUs.

FFXIII is only using 4 SPUs, too, last I heard.  There's mad headroom in teh Cell.

I would be interested in how much of the Cell was used in MGS4, GTA4, and Uncharted.... Perhaps the 360 isn't as close to the PS3 as many have come to believe.

And this little tidbit of knowledge is for all of you (had to look it up myself)
The Cell consists of 1 PPE and 8 SPE's, the PS3 only has access to 7 of the 8 SPE's.
PPE - Power Processor Element
SPE - Synergistic Processing Element

The eighth SPE was disable to improve chip yields. Meaning if a processor was created with 1 bad SPE they could still use the processor in a PS3. But only 6 SPE's are available for developers as the 7th is reserved to run the OS.

Uncharted about 30%, but that figure could be brought down (but isn't priority when you have so much untapped headroom).

Perhaps the 360 isn't as close to the PS3 as many have come to believe.

Certainly in terms of processing potential.

Some diagrams from the past showed Killzone 2 was still overloading the PPU with tasks to do, they are now using one additional processor so they probably moved more PPE tasks over to the SPUs. At this stage Insomniac is probably still ahead in comparison with regard to PS3 optimisation (for R2 they will have moved almost everything to the Cell's SPUs, reducing the PPU's role mainly to a manager chip with all the real work done by the more competent SPUs).

It's hard to predict if Resistance 2 or Killzone 2 will look better, it will come down to personal preferences. Maybe Killzone 2 will have more polished assets, but Resistance 2 may push for more simultaneously running activity and more Epic boss battles, battling with enemies towering up to 300 feet.

IMO both games will be well beyond the 360's abilities (without sacrificing quality), but there's a lot of headroom left for a Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 to again result into jaw dropping gains.

I think Gears of War 2 is about as good as it's going to get on the 360, unless harddrive caching can be relied on as a standard requirement for 360 developers in the future.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

I think Killzone 3 and FF14 will use 6 cores and maybe other games also.
