Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sexually explicit content

Personally, I find (roughly) 99% of sexually explicit content to be completely unnecessary in most movies; and in most cases it is just a crutch that is used to make a poorly written/acted/directed movie seem edgier (see David Cronenberg). I would much rather that videogames focus on what movies have abandoned like plot and character development, than have them start including sexually explicit content.

One could say the same about gunfights and other more violent sections in movies. The only difference is that most people have been raised seeing one regularly and the other omitted. Going into a steamy bedroom scene only to cut to black and then imply what just happened is essentially the same as seeing beginning of a gun fight in a movie like Die Hard or Rambo and then having the outcome implied in the next scene.

The real problem is how to make it as relevant as the gun fight. People have decades of experience making gunfights in movies but how many have experience meaningfully placing sex in them?

You could do a positions of the Kama Sutra game with the Wii Balance Board. The possibilities are endless.

I wish every game I played had hardcore porn in it. I watch hardcore porn all day when I'm not gaming, so it would save me a step.

As for kids, I'm not the type of guy who wouldn't kill someone just because of their age, so I guess I'm just progressive thinking, like that. I don't care about your kids and the mere fact that you expect me to, pisses me off.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

@Zenfoldor,

Why do you "disrespect David Jaffe as a developer, commentator, and human being."?

+1

Yes, there is little problem with such content (as long as it is appropriately rated and restricted), but more often than not it doesn't add to the quality of the game or movie.

@Slimebeat,

Why do you ask?

Tease.

I vote violence over sex. i mean, graphics are not good enough to be showing sex. anyway if i wanted sex i would pick a girl up or watch a porno.

I don't think it ads to the gaming experience and I don't think it's bad either. I'm kind of neutral on this subject.

Sex doesn't add to the gaming experience in most cases because it's tacked on. While most games have a goal which requires killing 1000s of enemies to progress and save the world, in those, sex generally doesn't advance you towards the goal and is pretty pointless.

However, when it is approached as the main content of the game (I'm currently thinking the Leisure Suit Larry series and Leather Goddesses of Phobos), then it can be quite well done. These games were very story focused and because of that could approach the topic quite cleverly.

People who are used to going without something often feel this way when they deal with that something.  They've become so used to not having it that actually having it feels unnecessary.  It's essentially cultural conditioning.  ^_^
