Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why 3rd Parties Can’t (And Probably Won’t) Succeed on the Wii

Good article. Stever89 have some valid points.

Just take a look at this week's Japan day 1sale #:

* Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 4 (PS2) : about 26k
* Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 4 (Wii) : less than 1k

Wii owners in Japan aren't buying 3rd party games.
Why shouldn't Japanese 3rd party developers be concerned?

Apparently PS2 owners aren't buying 3rd party games either based off of 26k.

The oddest thing is that I've never heard of this game or seen a screenshot of it yet it's getting used as the new example for Wii doom. Could someone tell me what this game is, why it was supposed to sell gangbusters, and why the PS2 version is getting a free pass? When it's selling 26k on something that has 4x the install base of the Wii, I don't really think the Wii version is the main problem.

@trestres

Not sure I agree with you here. I don't see Nintendo shifting the focus of there advertising or resources to anything other than to sell more Nintendo made software. And I think that while this will include a few "Core" gamer type games they know will sell well, most of their fucus will be on stuff like Wii Music and games like this designed to expand system sales to casual audiences where they don't have any real competition.

On a side note, if developers continue flood the Wii with low budget games the shear volume is sure to produce some orignial quality software (so even if it has a disproportionate share of crap, based on the numbers alone there will be good games to play for those who know where to look).

I am very curious to see how these non-GH multi-plat titles sell this year. That should be interesting.

Zen: several of those exclusives look terrible in those screenshots. Cute that Alone in the Dark is listed Wii/360 just because it's delayed for PS3.

But like I said, I'm curious how a game like Star Wars will fair on each system considering the differences between the versions.

Here comes the pessimist. Hello!

Those games all look great, as far as I know, just look at the videos. Besides what makes the Wii unique its the control not the graphics. How come you expect Wii to produce PS3/Crysis level graphics. I hope you were being sarcastic.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Star Wars, Conduit, Fatal Frame, and others look good on Wii. Some of those other games look terrible in the screenshots that Zen showed. Graphics only don't matter when the Wii gets criticized. When a new game is announced and only screenshots are shown, the first (and only) thing people say is how good they look. That happened with Star Wars, Fatal Frame, and Conduit. Whatever the system, graphics show a level of quality from the developer. Perhaps it is just the screens, but Fragile, de Blob, Spyborgs, and Rygard don't look good. The quality of the game is what matters, and those aren't showing up very often. Everyone should be buying Boom Blox, though.

Hmmmm.... Well by sheer force of numbers the third parties WILL sell. No reasoning is required, they'll sell because the Wii has a large userbase now, and it will have a huge userbase in the future.

/Thread? :P

Tease.

I guess this will sum it up again:

Third party games can sell on the wii. They just need to make sure it's a G rated mini-game collection.

But seriously, Third party games can sell on the wii. just don't expect many 3rd party games to go above 2 million. The only one at the moment to go above 2 mil is guitar hero 3, i think. If 3rd party developers target the right audience, and make the game up to the standards of Nintendo games, it has the potential to sell well.

I'm not advertising them. I'm just listing them. I'm sure that if you were doing the list you would pick the best photos available for each game, but not me. First ones I can find. I'm not a marketing agency. This is a pointless line of discussion, also, btw.

As for Alone in the Dark, planned or not, it's a timed multiplat exclusive for the Wii60, as I couldn't very well list it as a complete multiplat without catching flack from the other end.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Ok, you are listing games, but we have no idea how good they are so what point does it prove? It's just a technicality, but if the game isn't canceled and was already announced, it's already a multiplat game. But whatever, I don't even care about that game. Even early reviews are bad (for 360...there ae 6 on metacritic but I don't see any for Wii yet).
