The DS and the psp both have great games, but it isn't hard to see that the psp is definetly being affected by the DS. You can however, make the arguement that the ps3360 isn't being affected by the wii. Just look at the games. The psp is being starved, while the DS is getting fatter and fatter.
Why would a publisher take a big risk on a game for the PSP when they can release one on the DS and are almost guaranteed to make money?

BUT, If you look at the...... well..... I'm trying to say something positive about the psp....... they have prettier games? (and they really do look great sometimes)
The DS just has variety and quantity..... I guess you could say the same about the psp, to a lesser extent. At least there aren't 10 mario games available for the psp.

That's a positive? Just buy other DS games...

Thats what the real positive is ... yes , cinematic/console-like experience on the go :D Thats what Im looking for , and thats something the DS just cant give to me ;)

Sony thought they could compete with Nintendo, but after seeing the bad results, they just say they aren't competing, just for their own sake.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Hasn't the PSP been outselling both the DS and the Wii in Japan for like... 3 months straight? Is that some kind of fluke? Any chance that said trend will move on to the rest of the world?

grafix - sound - functionality - games are all better on psp, ds is no match in any way what soever. what the ds does have is, a very high purchase rate amoungst family/child type gamers, and will sell lots and lots in years to come.

You are cherry picking:  how about adding "control" to the mix?

I could be wong, but it appears the "DS candle" burnt brightest in Japan, and NA/Europe have a long way to catch up to the penetration the DS has in Japan.  Look how quickly it outsold the PS2 lifetime in Japan, and it still does large figures weekly.

From what I understand, the Japanses are very into folding to peer pressure, and the PSP is "in" right now thanks to a burst of AAA games a few monts back.  Also, PSP suits the Japanses lifestyle of having to commute daily; sometimes up to 4 hours a day. As a do it all multimedia player with its biggest weakness being a 5 hour battery life, the PSP is perfect. Simply recharge it every night, and buy a new battery for $40 when it goes dead after a year or so of daily use.

I don't think this will spread to the rest of the world, however I think the PSP will continue to sell thanks to its multimeida and pirating abilites and some people will pick it up for games... GoW bundle Madden bundle ect. Should sell well to 18-25 year old males in the U.S. Also a Kingdom Hearts bundle should spike sales. Just hope for PSPs sake Birth by sleep comes out 6 months before xxx/x days (can't rember the numbers)

DS is no competition for PSP, says Sony

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said the company doesn't see the DS as a direct rival for the PSP - despite the fact they're both handheld machines for playing computer games on.

"We've always thought that the PSP as a platform is standing on its own - there's no direct competition. Some people think that the DS is its rival simply because it's portable, but the positioning and the main user base are totally different," he told GamesIndustry.biz.

"It's just been a question of how to take the best out of the platform and deliver it to consumers, so they understand that they can use it every day for many things. So I think we're still early on the curve."

Yoshida went on to admit there have been issues with a lack of third-party software, but said it's all set to change in the longer term. "Like when we started with PlayStation One, with videogames as being a toy, and looking at the individual countries when it comes to introducing new aspects to the platform - in our minds we're doing the same sort of thing with the PSP since 2005," he observed.

"It's too early to make judgements - we know there's a lot more that we can do, and with the massive growth of the industry we understand that third party publishers have so many choices, many more than they have resources. Sometimes we struggle to convince them to put more resources into the PSP.

"But when they really focus on what they can do with the platform, there are still lots of good business opportunities that are still viable, and will continue to be, because there are no competing platforms."

Here we go... direct competition, straight from Yoshida himself. Company's are allocating resources to one of two platforms so that alone points to competition. Be calling it "a struggle" he indirectly admits defeat in my eyes

Well the PSP is the only handheld to really get into the market after nintendo has had it in the bag for so long.. so that alone is an achievement.. and plus it really is 2 different markets... 2 different age groups alltogether..
