Sell the broken ones as is for parts only. People will buy them.
if you list them on ebay, list the model number on the back. For the regular ps2's its something like SCPH - xxxxx . Not sure about slimline ps2's. This is important as there was something like 20 ps2 revisions and parts are largely not cross compatible.
Guess the free ps1/ps2 from your mom's work had a little catch, huh?

Yeah, CraigsList and Ebay are about your only options for the broken machines. Stores like Movie Trading Company (if you have those near you) or anything that sells older used games and systems will probably take your working PS1 *if you have the original Duelshock Controller (not the one without the analogs) and all the cords.
I was trying to unload my old PS1 and they would take it because I had the very original PS controller without the duel analogs and they wouldn't take it because of that.
