Forums - Gaming Discussion - The "I don't care about this game, so it doesn't matter" trick

The title should explain what I'm talking about. It's a common ploy.

Random person shows that they have no interest in:

Pokemon
Halo
Metal Gear Solid
Dragon Quest
Wii Sports
Gran Turismo

Or any other title (those happen to be particularly popular choices), and thereby they believe that game matters less than their personal favorites. Statements such as: "How can you overlook the Wii's great titles this winter, with Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Brothers, and Super Mario Galaxy? The PS3 has nothing to compare to it!" are common, and rely on the poster 1) loving Nintendo games and 2) not caring about any of the significant PS3 exclusive titles coming this winter. Someone could easily turn this around say: "How can you overlook MGS4? What about Uncharted: Drake's Fortune?" without giving any credit to the Nintendo titles listed above.

In short, a good deal of argument arises from these issues. People completely underestimate the value of the games they don't personally enjoy, and overestimate the improtance of the ones they do.

Very true for most people

Mario's been a popular one around here as of late.

Really, it depends on what argument you're having. A lot of times, people think they're arguing about "favorites" when they state "best." In the end, all our arguments are more-or-less for fun anyway... nothing changes because one guy keeps saying Nintendo is kiddy... nothing changes because one guy keeps saying Sony is corrupt... nothing changes because one guy keeps saying Microsoft is nothing without Halo... it's the internet. In the end, the sales will shut us all up, and prove once and for all, that God hates gays.

Wait, what?

I agree about Gran Turismo, as people often pass it off as just another racer, but that's really just a load of BS, I mean the sales figures on this website show that GT3 sold just under 15 mil, and GT4 sold well over 8 mil. I'm pretty sure that when GT5 comes out it will be pretty huge, as it will probably enable people to download new cars and tracks, meaning that you won't need to buy another racing game ever really, also it finally has more than 6 cars :D

However I'm glad you didn't put Mario on that list, because I seriosuly couldn't care less for Mario games and have never really enjoyed them, but I'm still partial to a couple of other's on those list, for instance I've always quite liked Halo, and may buy it for PC in the near future, and also have bought many a Pokemon game.

I think it all just relies on the fact that the poster really doesn't want to give credit to any certain game on another system, and justify the ability for a game to sell well.

IE, PS3 has no games, SMG is going to be uber-awesome and send the Wii past the PS2's lifetime sales in 3 weeks.

Poster forgets that PS3 has GTAIV, a series that has far outsold most every recent Mario game by quite a bit.

The bias is because they really don't like GTA, nor Playstation, and only love Nintendo titles.

It happens with most people. This is why most fanboys on this website suck so much on the prediction league. I dislike Halo, and most FPS games, but that doesn't mean that I'm not going to acknowledge it'll be this years biggest selling title outside of GTA and to a smaller extent, SMG.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Especiallly when you talk about sales you have to throw away your personal opinion. I've played Halo & 2. I'm not a fan of the franchise, because I don't like the style. Grunts are acting like 3 years old kids. Aliens with beards? But when looking at gameplay. It's the best shooter of PS2, Xbox and NGC. I'm also aware that Halo 3 will sell like Wii's.

I just want to point out: this is *precisely* what the original poster was talking about.  Regardless of how much you could care for Mario games, they're consistently top-sellers, and always push consoles.

I think people tend to discount GTAIV because it's multiplatform, and when talking about the "system moving" games, multiplatform games aren't seen as mportant as exclusive games. I don't think anyone denies the power of GTA to move consoles. And I think it will move heaps of consoles, but 360s over PS3s most likely.

Personally, though, I can't believe people don't get sick of it after however many versions of GTA3 were released

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

VG Chartz data seems to disagree with that, the only time they've sold really well in recent years (GT3 level) has been on GB, and that was still a fair few years ago. Yes I know they were big on NES and SNES, but that was when Nintendo had little competition, compared to recent years.

VG Chartz actually backs me up.  Like I said in another thread somewhere, Mario 64 outsold both Gran Turismo, and GT2, despite PS1's larger userbase.  From this site:

NameConsolePublisherJapanAmericaOthersTotal
Super Mario 64Nintendo1.926.873.1011.89
Gran TurismoSony2.553.994.3110.85
Gran Turismo 2Sony1.713.963.709.37

Mario Sunshine sold almost 6 million units, which, although less than GT3, is still absolutely nothing to sneeze at.  6 million is system-selling, no matter how you cut it.  The original Halo only sold half a million more than that.  Are you telling me suddenly Halo shouldn't be on that list either?

I mean, unless you can show me some *other* Mario game that hasn't been selling.  Are you including franchise spin-offs?  'cause even then there isn't a single game in VG Chartz's database with "Mario" in the title that's sold less than 1 million copies.  The list:

Like I said, you're just proving the original poster's point.  You "don't like" Mario, so you assume the games don't do well, when in fact, the "Mario" tag pretty much assures a game platinum sales, even at the end of a console's life, and even if the game was only released in 2 teritorries.
