GTA IV didn't boost console sales, says analysts

Analysts at Lazard Capital Markets and Wedbush Morgan secutities have said in their May NPD preview that Grand Theft Auto IV has not generated a meaningful increase in sales for either console - contradicting claims made by Microsoft and Sony - and that software sales for the month have increased in excess of 30 per cent.

Outlining predictions for the games industry ahead of the NPD results, the analysts Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Morgan, and Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets, predicted a 39 per cent and 30 percent growth in software sales respectively.

Both noted key titles for driving the sales such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Iron Man, Wii Fit, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and of Mario Kart Wii.

"Solid videogame software sales continued in May, and we expect roughly 30 per cent growth in console and handheld software for the month," Sebastian said.

However, he added, "We do not believe the recent release of GTA IV has generated meaningful incremental demand for the Xbox 360 or PS3 platforms"

The analysts further noted that price cuts could do more than GTA IV to boost console sales.

"Next generation console unit sales are running well ahead of the level in the analogous period of 2003 (when console prices averaged under USD 200), implying room for significant sales growth as price cuts are implemented," Pachter explained.

Analysts Expect 30-39% May Software Growth

By Tom Ivan
Colin Sebastian and Michael Pachter both expect the NPD Group to report continued US software sales growth during May. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s Wii is expected to have cleaned up again on the hardware front.

“We expect roughly 30 percent growth in console and handheld software for the month,” said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Sebastian in an investor note sent out ahead of NPD’s monthly sales data release, expected Thursday.

Wedbush Morgan’s Pachter was a little more confident in the market. “We forecast [software] sales of $530 million, +39 percent compared to last year’s $381 million,” he said.

Hardware sales predictions were as follows from Pachter (The simExchange) (VGChartz):

Wii - 750,000 (744,000) (645,327)
Xbox 360 – 250,000 (216,000) (191,992)
PS3 - 225,000 (228,000) (177,989)
PS2 - 125,000 (n/a) (105,894)
DS - 550,000 (510,000) (454,086)
PSP - 200,000 (211,000) (193,188)

“We believe hardware unit sell-through remains steady, with strong demand at retail for the Nintendo Wii,” offered Sebastian. “We do not believe the recent release of GTA IV has generated meaningful incremental demand for the Xbox 360 or PS3.

“We continue to expect Xbox 360 price cuts this year ($50 reduction)," he added, "while Sony appears content to focus on achieving PlayStation profitability at the current PS3 price points.”

Yeah, IDK WTF happened with GTA IV.

Here's hoping that MGS4's exclusivity will not result in the same thing for the PS3 in June NPD.

Iron Man is a key title for driving sales? How low the industry had sunk.

bullsh*t

i bought a ps3 just for gta 4 (and because i bought a new full hd tv for the European championship of soccer (very big in europe)

i guess a lot of people bought a ps3 or a xbox360 for gta 4,
i guess nobody in the whole world bought a console just to play iron man.

The ps2 is starting to die off. They've still got that big silver bullet, 99$ - I wonder what's their treshold for squeezing the trigger.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

They have a seperate bullet for UK: £99

Regarding Pachters numbers.... they all seem higher than VGC, yet he isn't counting Canada etc.... so either his predictions are all a little high, or VGC is low on everything.

The 80Gb reintroduction will help more than MGS4 itself.
