Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft unveiling new 360 RPGs next week in Japan

Darth, sooner or later you need to accept that the ps3 isn't gonna be the house of jrpgs this gen. Bashing both the 360 and its lineup won't change the fact that your console isn't getting jrpg love.

Lost Odyssey is a solid game and playing just a few hours on someone's else's console isn't the way to get a proper impression. The problem is not that LO isn't good (which it is) but rather that since you don't own a 360 it's a game you can't get and thus it must be bad so you don't miss it.

In a certain way, it must suck to be you: a jrpg fan stuck with both consoles (wii and ps3) without jrpgs. You know, while you keep posting in VGchartz, we'll be playing LO, IU, ToV, Cry On, etc...

If I were you, I'd try to secure a DS: it's relatively cheap and has a nice lineup of jrpgs. Wait, you own a PSP already - man, you gotta stop being sony's little fan... you'll live happier.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

Reasons why FF10 was terrible:

1.) Overly simplistic combat: Switch in character that enemy is weak too. IE, Wakka for flying creatures. Kill creature in one hit. Switch in auron for armored creatures, kill creature in one hit. Repeat boring combat over and over, and without a 'heal all' spell for the majority of the game.

2.) Awful main character: Tidus is whiny, his outfit makes him look like a boy band member, and he's constantly crying "I hate you daddy". On an annoyance scale of 10, he rates a 13 or 14.

3.) Music subpar at best. One of Uematsu's worst performances, possibly due to the assistants he had to work with during this game. (I think it was the first time he had to deal with that?)

4.) Blitzball. Sucked. Ass. Getting Wakka's ultimate weapon took my level of hatred for this game to all new highs.

5.) Square's overbearing and awkward use of religious symbolism has gotten incredibly bad over the years. It was painful and clunky enough in FF7 (but at least managed to work reasonably enough), and in FF10 with Sin they went way over the top.

6.) English translation and voice acting: The game may have been better in Japanese, I don't know . But what I do know, is the english voice acting destroyed all pacing of dialogue and rendered the comedy unfunny, the pathos wooden and unconvincing.

7.) Plot moves slowly and is predictable at best, boring at worst.

8.) Grid system promised new and interesting ways to make your character unique while leveling! And yet.... really you followed a linear path, but instead of having your attributes given to you automatically at level up, you had to micromanage doling out the points. By the time you could really start getting your character strong enough in other areas, you could max out the grid and they were all identical anyway.

In comparison, FF6 had a score of great characters, beautiful soundtrack, an engaging story, swift plot movement, fun and interesting combat, espers were a bit cumbersome for the leveling bonuses, but not overbearing like the grid system. Great villains, great heroes, lots of fun.

In order of greatness, skipping the NES games

FF4, FF6, FF Tactics, FF9, FF7, FF8, FF5, FF12, FF10

The story is not entirely original but it was a great story anyway IMO.  The main character was whiny but was he really that bad?  Blitzball did suck though.

Why has this got to complaining about FF X?
I think the fact that I have heard from like 20 different people that LO is great, there must be some credit to that

Can you Sony-fanboys please go and discuss the shitty episodes of Final Fantasy on your own board.

I may have gotten a little sidetracked :D Didn't mean to derail the thread into why FFX is lame and why I'd rather see new IP's announced than some modern-age Square Enix drivel.

:D

I like that MS has gone after the RPGs this generation. I just hope the lackluster response from the japanese won't cause them to give up the strategy for the next gen. PS2's strength was its game diversity, and MS is making up tons of lost ground this generation

True the combat was very simple, but this also forced you to upgrade almost every character. Which is a change from the regular FF. USually all the characters were clones of the others and in this one they were unique.

2.) Awful main character: Tidus is whiny, his outfit makes him look like a boy band member, and he's constantly crying "I hate you daddy". On an annoyance scale of 10, he rates a 13 or 14.

Hes not the best main character, and the dad parts early on were pretty bad. But once you got into the story and all it actually all ended up ok. He had to come to hate his dad or he couldnt have done what he did. And that high five at the end was so danm awsome.

3.) Music subpar at best. One of Uematsu's worst performances, possibly due to the assistants he had to work with during this game. (I think it was the first time he had to deal with that?)

By far the one i disagree with most. The Piano music is my favorite music from FF yet. Its absolutly perfect to fit the mood of the game. The combat music was good but not the best. Still the music with the ending was great.

4.) Blitzball. Sucked. Ass. Getting Wakka's ultimate weapon took my level of hatred for this game to all new highs.

I found blitzball extremely fun. And it was your choice to get  wakkas ultimate. It was annoying as hell grinding for matierals in FF 8 as well but its the cost of getting the best weapons.

5.) Square's overbearing and awkward use of religious symbolism has gotten incredibly bad over the years. It was painful and clunky enough in FF7 (but at least managed to work reasonably enough), and in FF10 with Sin they went way over the top.

All opinion but its put in in order to have many people relate to something in their own life.

6.) English translation and voice acting: The game may have been better in Japanese, I don't know . But what I do know, is the english voice acting destroyed all pacing of dialogue and rendered the comedy unfunny, the pathos wooden and unconvincing.

It was not that bad, though not good either. Star ocean 3 is the one you should laugh at. (holy cow.)

7.) Plot moves slowly and is predictable at best, boring at worst.

I also extremely disagree. It does move slowly for a while, but it also makes you more attached to your characters instead of the plot in whole. And the suprise of the FInal Summoning consequence did suprise me though i did partially know. And your going to honstly tell me you knew sin was tidas father?

8.) Grid system promised new and interesting ways to make your character unique while leveling! And yet.... really you followed a linear path, but instead of having your attributes given to you automatically at level up, you had to micromanage doling out the points. Err no. By far FF 10 gave the most unique characters besides the older FF. 9 Did as well though before i forget.

In comparison, FF6 had a score of great characters, beautiful soundtrack, an engaging story, swift plot movement, fun and interesting combat, espers were a bit cumbersome for the leveling bonuses, but not overbearing like the grid system. Great villains, great heroes, lots of fun.

@mrstickball

good RPG's that get lower than 85 on average....yeah sure I am soooo bitter right now

for me I have made it clear many times

FF13>>>>>all

You're talking about the same FF13 that is currently not available and won't be available until early 2010? According to you this non-existing game beats all the readily available JRPGs on the 360? You must truly enjoy your waiting then.

Besides, judging by the sparse material that has been shown so far imho FF13 looks too over-stylized, as if they were in some strange way trying to resemble the Matrix movies which has little to do with the FF that I love. I'm curious if SE will really be able to deliver the Über-RPG that it seems to be mostly considered.

@starcraft

as there is a PS3 exclusive Atlus are making....its definetely Shin Megami Tensei as that series sells the most in Japan....no-one in their right minds would put it on 360.
Neat fact, Darth: Did you know that SMT titles have been published before on the Xbox? Either way, the fact is, Microsoft should be admired that they actually give a rats behind about the JRPG and RPG market. You can moan, and whine all you want about the be-all Final Fantasy series (which is awesome), but it's kind of like arguing the N64s library vs. the PS1's library: Sure, the N64 had a few awesome, groundbreaking games (Turok, Goldeneye, Mario 64, Zelda 64, Starfox), but which one had the better library?  It's the same way. Sure, the 360 doesn't have the blockbuster uber-RPG, but it has a vastly more robust WRPG and JRPG library by leaps and bounds. While US PS3 fans are still eagerly awaiting Disagea 3, and Valkyire of the Battlefield, 360 fans are planning on how to get ready for the nearly-dozen WRPGs and JRPGs hitting the console in the next 6 months. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather go for a Tales game, 2-3 Sakaguchig games, and alot of mediocre RPGs than 1-2 untested, but most likely great RPGs.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Just out of curiosity, what volume of "game that will turn around the fate of the 360 in Japan" are we on now? 10? 12?

The dedication you show to any particular console or company is inversely proportional to the number of times you have gotten laid. If you get laid enough, even if you prefer a certain brand, you just don't give enough of a shit to argue about it on the internet.
