Forums - Sony - When should the Playstation brand die off?

Yes the playstation brand does, it is basically the standard word for video game console still, and I doubt sony will leave it for some time

Not so much in America. Xbox is really becoming the new playstation. Parents wander around looking for "xbox" and think "xbox" means video game system.  World wide, playstation may very well be more synonymous with gaming.

Although Wii seems to have gotten some attention also.

I strongly Disagree with that. No way is 10mil (NA minus Canada and Mexico) Enough for anything to go hand to hand with a country that has a population of 300mil

Especially with the Wii nippin at its heals and the Ps3 on the uprise.

According to VG Charts the ps3 beat the ps2 and the 360 to 10 million.

See Vipers post on first page.

I think they will ditch the number , and not the name . The Playstation barnd is still powerull , no matter what people are saying . Starting it all over aggain would be stupid IMO . I think the PS4 will have a name rather than a number ... like PS Evo or something :?

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

They should drop the xbox name...too many puns...

sexbox
rexbox

............okay, im out...maybe i exaggerated

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Sony has spent a good deal of money building the PlayStation brand. It has helped sell the PS3 even though it has had few games and cost twice as much as the competition. I'd say that the strength of the brand is indisputable. (I can't help thinking about my friends saying '... but is IS a playstation, ofc it's awesome' or somesuch)

The only reason I can see for Sony abandoning the PS brand is if they, as previously suggested, want to do something that does not go well with the current image. Something along the lines of what Sega tried to do with the dreamcast (although that didn't go very well).

A funny difference between Nintendo and Sony and Microsoft is that the latter has attached the image more to the console names, while the Nintendo image is firmly rooted in the company name. Clapiotis was touching this point when he said that Nintendo was once synonym to video games, while later Playstation took over that role. Naturally this is in part due to the fact that Sony and Microsoft are doing so much more than videogames, but it can also be attributed to all gaming machines (to include the PSP) from sony and microsoft beeing named PlayStation/XBOX.

In short, I think Sony has to really do a turnaround for them to think dropping the Playstation brand would be worthwhile.

This is invisible text!

I think that Killergran has made a good point, going back on topic.  The PlayStation name is more equivalent to the Nintendo name.

On the other hand, what about that Nintendo name?  Nintendo Entertainment System.  Super Nintendo Entertainment System.  Nintendo Sixty-Foooouuuur 64.  It wasn't until after the third Nintendo system failed to come out on top that they broke with the tradition of integrating the Nintendo name right into the system name.  Gamecube.

I still think it's unlikely that Sony's next console will be anything other than the PlayStation 4, but ... who knows?  Okama Gamesphere, anyone?

One major problem here.... Nintendo is the Company name. So Nintendo dropping Nintendo is like Sony dropping Sony from "Sony Playstation"

Basically Playstation is their console name of choice... kinda like how Rex is the Bears quaterback of choice.

Au contraire. It's still the Nintendo Gamecube, but the company name is no longer a PART of the system name. Unless I'm GREATLY mistaken, no one called the NES the "Entertainment System". And what -- "Super Entertainment System"? "64" I did hear, but only as an abbreviation like "360".

Technically, I suppose, that means that it was the Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo Super Nintendo Entertainment System, etc. Kinda dumb, which is why no one ever says it. Technically, I hear Mario's name is Mario Mario (first and last are the same name). I guess that's just how the Big N rolls.

==> for me it is wrong

Xbox name is strong in NA and match the PS name (pretty sure) but I doubt it has outcompeted it. PS3 would never be able to sell so well if it was the case.

In PAL, PS name is really strong AND Xbox name is pretty weak outside UK (or others others ^^). Overall, people dont hate Xbox they just dont know it.

Wii/DS are the real big winner. People in my laboratory (that just dont care of console (+25 years old + girl)) are going to purchase DSlite and some already have the Wii. They also like to add how "males" (mainly their brothers) are still interested in getting a PS3 ...
