No, it really isn't a marathon. There are many feedback loops in the videogame market that reinforce the leader over its competition. That would be why hardware vendors who aspire to take the lead try to launch their model of the generation before the market leader can release theirs and establish a stranglehold once again. It doesn't always work (Genesis, Xbox 360) but it always results in the keener getting a bigger slice of the pie than it otherwise would.
