Wii/DS are completely different. Each system is complementig the other, not competing with one another. They were designed that way so they could expand instead of shrink

As you see, there are different technologies between the two. But in the GB-GBA era, if you compare them to the NES, SNES, N64 and even GC. the only difference is th3 obvious one: the consoles are just more powerful (GBA can have 3D games).
But in the market, what's portable can kill what you can have at home if the value is "good enough for them" if it has similar experience than the home systems.
The DS is not holding the Wii since the experience is a lot different, you can't have the same gamplay on DS and Wi. Just the imput and number of screens are enough proof
