Forums - General - Grave of the Fireflies

Last night I saw Grave of the Fireflies, and I have to say, it is the most powerful film I have ever seen, it's no wonder it's won so many awards.

Based on true events from the Novel with the same name, two children who have been 'seperated' from their parents in World War II, and as a result they are forced to try to survive amidst widespread famine, with the older son taking care of his little sister.

If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour and go and watch it as soon as you can find the time.

I saw it like 7 years ago while studying exams, could do nothing for at least 2 days. Only film that got me to cry (I was like 22 at the time). Only onther movie to come close to getting me to cry was Donnie Darko's (that ending!).

But agree, Fowerflies was just so powerful... Getting goosebumps rethinking about it...

I've had this film play on my mind all day today at work, and I'll admit, this is literally the only movie I can think of that has ever made me shed a tear.

Possibly one of the best war movies, and the only one telling the story from outsider's view. Loved the movie, probably one of my favourite from Ghibli Studio (and yes, I do know it's not exactly produced by Ghibli, you anime freaks. ;)

I like the fact they don't try to force the story onto yourself, don't MAKE you cry, I wonder if it was live action (as oppose to an anime), it would have the same effect.

My wife went through an entire box of tissues in that one. It's hard to get any sadder than that.

There is a live action, though it hasn't been translated and is near impossible to find.
