Forums - Nintendo - Why Mario Kart Wii couldn't get "AAA" from critics.

Nintendo Franchise = Strike 1 point
Sequel of a Nintendo Franchise = Strike 1 point
Mario Characters = Strike 1 point
No Guns = Strike 1 point
etc.

Sure, silly things were cut out and removed, but scores seemed pretty harsh none the less.

Come on Onimusha, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard you say. We even had a discussion a long time ago about the different ratings of game (many of the E rated ones made by Nintendo) and their place on Gamerankings and in reviews. And it showed that plenty of Nintendo games were at the top of the list.

Even if we're going by a review scale of out of 100, than Super Mario Galaxy would have had at least 4 points docked from every review, which is obviously not true since its average on Gamerankings is over 97%.

But I forgive you, since you were just being spiteful.

Getting back to the main topic, I haven't played the game and I really have no clue what snaking is.

Snaking is using the turbo slide to go back and forth across straight aways to get speed boosts. It was viewed as the only skill that mattered to most of the MK:DS online community and was extremely powerful. The hardcore fans have been bitching and moaning about it being crippled since it was first rumored to be on the way out. The removal of snaking certainly caused the average review score to drop a bit because it takes the game further from being a sim racer and closer to being a party game.

its always seemed like mario kart games score quite low for how good they are. every generation the mario kart game is one of the best multiplayer games available hands down. yet they never get great scores.

at first i felt the reviews were justified because of the no co-op grand prix. but then i realized that the co-op is better than ever before and its in the vs. section. the only minor negative is you can't actually do the cups themselves in co-op so you can't go through the game and set new records for the cups in two player mode. but with all the new options they give you for co-op racing the changes far outweigh that one negative.

i'd say this is how it breaks down:

positives- expanded co-op racing, online, bikes added, tricks, 16 old school tracks, old battle arenas, and all the sweet new features of time trialing, added difficulty, greater differences between characters, and it's ridiculously fun!

negatives- new battle arenas are specifically made for lots of people online so with a few less than 12 people they are far too big, teams-only battle (just no point in only including that), no special items (my biggest complaint against the game cuz i thought that was the best addition of Double Dash), and the red shell is far improved to the point where you almost can't dodge it which i think is an effort on nintendo's part to appeal more to the non-gamers but it takes away a crucial element available to skilled racers (i mean now red shells are harder to block by putting an object behind you because they seem to come in from the side, you can't lose them on quick abrupt turns, and they will actually slow down and come to a stop for you as well as wait for you if you hit a jump or something to be able to hit you).

the in-betweens (things i'm not sure on or are decent but not great or bad)- the change in the drift speed boost, the items, the courses.

to explain the in-betweens i'd say i kinda like the new drifting and no snaking but at the same time that just seems like another nintendo attempt to take away the skill of the game and let non-gamers compete which isn't a good thing. also the items are decent, i like some new ones, but i think the pow is pretty dumb, overall the items are fine but not great, but the lack of specials is a huge negative as stated earlier. and the courses, well so far i haven't decided if they are that great, they are at least pretty good, but i don't know if nintendo really made some amazing new courses for us in this one.

bottom line: a few negatives, lots of great new things added, and a few things either changed or weren't changed that i think are decent but don't necesarily make the game any better that previous MK's. but the game is soooooooo fun like all the mario karts so for me it is definitely AAA.

there is a reason why this game doesnt recieve aaa status and thats cos it isnt that good a game

sure it seems really good at first but however the wii wheel isnt as accurate as controller, and the gameplay gets repetative after awhile and is very slow speed even at 150 cc, also i didnt like the fact that they took out character special techniques from double dash because now it seems pointless which charachter you use

then there is the online mode which is pretty good however its pot luck if u win because every one is the same standard online more or less, so if ur leading the race most of the way through in a second someone from the back can get the bullet and take u out causing u to end up in last place where is the the justice in that for spending most of 3 laps in first. other complaints about the online is its laggy and slower than single player only being 100 cc

Each charater has individual stat adjustments that make them play differently. What appears to be true, is not actually true in this case. I do miss a lot of the features from double dash as well, but the characters are more unique this time around. There is a list available at Gamefaqs.

Snaking was lame. Snaking separated MK players into 2 groups, snakers and non-snakers. The snakers would fight for 1st place and non-snakers would fight for last. Now everybody's back on the same page without a superskill, but it's STILL all about skill. Yeah some random blue shells can mess you up, but if you can't handle a blue shell, YOU DESERVED TO DIE.

oh yeah also the wii wheel is cool, i don't know if it is actually better or worse than the normal controls but it is a nice addition. i pretty much always use the wheel.
