Forums - Sony - PS2-PS3=same story

The PS2 was way ahead, and was pulling farther and farther ahead. The PS3 is way behind, and is falling farther and farther behind. These launches just are.not.comparable.

Don`t worry, not for long.

PS3 it`s not selling bad(only low). It`s selling good, like PS2 did first year.
If ps3 will sell less then 5 mln, by the end of this year, then yeah, ps3 is not doing good.

PS2 in first 6 month in japan made 2,5 Mln. with 300$ price.
PS3 in first 6 month in japan+usa made 2,4 Mln. with 600$ price

PS2 in another 6 month made 8 mln. worldwide with price 300$.
PS3 in another 6 month have to make 7 mln. worldwide with 600$ price.

1,5-2 for japan, 2,5-3 mln. for usa, 2-2,5 mln. for other.
Not possible you say?
June - NGS, Folklore, Darkness, R6V.
July - EG5, Lair, NGS.
August - EofJ, SingStar, Stranglehold.
September - UT3, AC, HS, Warhawk, Guitar Hero III.
October - GTA4, Folklore, "Home".
November - R&C, Socom, Haze, The Spy,
December - Uncharted, LBP, Tekken6, GT5 prologue.

+ Possible price CUT.

November-December may make 2 mln. in usa and 2 mln. in other + 1 mln. in japan. That would be 5 mln. and 2 mln during june-october, i don`t se a problem.

CrazzyMan you have posted this information in several threads. In each of those threads we have discussed thoroughly how you have twisted the numbers to make it seem as if the PS3 is performing at a similar level to the PS2. The PS3 hasn't sold nearly as well as the PS2. So could you please cut the crap?

To be honest... the PS3 is performing as well as the PS2 did at the begining... the thing is the Wii is selling way more than those consoles (first 6 months)

The thing is that those are world comparison charts, and the PS2 was in one region for nearly a year, so of course it would have a slower start worldwide. So a better comparison is a sperate chart for the US and for Japan.

In those the PS3 is selling as well as the PS2, yet the PS2 was supply constrained in that time, and the PS3 wasn't. So if the PS2 had as much supply at the time as the PS3, it would have been selling a lot better.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

There are lies, damed lies and statistics ... and it seems like there are a lot of statistics being used in dishonest ways on this thread

The PS2's early competition was the Dreamcast which was poorly supported by third parties (EA refused to produce games for it) and was easily killed off by PS2 Hype (Sony compared the Dreamcast's 3 Million polygons per second in game to the PS2's 66 Million unshaded theoritical polygons, and Sony also released doctored screenshots of games claiming a massive power advantage); by the time the PS2 launched the Dreamcast was a dead system.

There were claims that the Dreamcast would have a comeback being that it was $100 cheaper than the PS2 but (as we know) no console has ever successfully come back.

When the PS2 launched it sold quickly even though it had no quality games. In the 12-18 months it had (depending on the reigon) between the launch of the PS2 and the Gamecube and XBox the PS2 built a massive library, 20 Million unit lead, and of most of its biggest titles (Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X) either had been released or were soon released after the release of the XBox and Gamecube.

The "Console War" was over before the Gamecube or XBox released, and those were the only two consoles tge PS2 was really competing against.

In what way does this situation map closely to the PS3?

5 million for november december huh? Someone better put that in their sig.

x360 on november-december in usa made 2 mln. just with 1 AAA game. PS3 in 2nd part of 2007 will have like 5 AAA titles and more then 10 amazing games. Also may have price cut.

+in europe and japan ps3 always had stronger positions. Btw, + Killzone 2 public beta is coming this year, + GT5 demo or GT5 prologue coming this year, + FFXIII demo coming this year, + probably MGS4 demo may come this year too. Fans of these series will be happy.

I see you listed 5 AAA demos but no actual AAA games.  Will Sony have any actual AAA games released durring this time period?  Because I don't know many people who will buy any game console for demos alone, let alone 5 million people.

And correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the 360 beating the PS3 in europe on a weekly basis?

The PS2 sold more in one weekend than the PS3 did in over seven months in Japan. And at the rate the PS3 is selling it may be 8-9 months in total before the PS3 even catches up the the PS2's first weekend sales.

You just said that the PS3 has sold as much in its first 6 months in a market 3 times as big as what PS2 sold in its first 6 months in a market 1/3 the size.  Congratulations you proved the PS3 is selling 1/3 as well as the PS2 even though it's price is only double.  Never mind that the PS3's first 6 months included Xmas which the PS2's launch did not.

Same was said for PS1, PS2 and now PS3.

What made PS and Ps2 succesfull, FF MGS GT. Does the PS3 not have them.

At the end when wii/360/PS3 production ends, PS3 will have the majority of the market.

Lol so adamantly convinced just a few games will save the sinking ship. Lol, so dellusional. Sorry friend, when the PS2 came out, everyone was bonkers over it, it didn't cost 600 dollars and had a useful media drive, don't act like this is a case of the boy who cried wolf repeating itself. I can't believe the shameless and childish justifications you're now relying on to sleep at night. I'm adding this one to the list, lol.

Yeah, it will be the same. Because even Sony Haters say same things as in 2000.

Sony is also under the mistaken impression that including the ability to play DVD movies is a huge selling point. But true technophiles and hardcore gamers probably already have DVD drives. I'm a good case in point. I already own a Sony DVD player, so I could not care less if the $299 PS2 can play movies. I'd rather pay less and get a machine that just plays games instead.

In comparison, the Sega Dreamcast sells for $149 and has a giant library of games already available. Sega also has an online game network, Seganet.

The DVD was the reason casual gamers bought one, technophiles don't make up the majority of the market and for your information, all the technophiles have already bought their PS3s, sorry. And yes there have always been sony haters, but that doesn't invalidate Sony's situation now or make it look any less grim. You're just trying to kid yourself that everything will be alright and that you'll somehow come out on top again. By your logic the success of the NES and SNES is proof that the N64 came out on top in the fifth gen? Right?.... Right?

These threads are really getting tiresome, Sony fans forcing their wanton beliefs of Sony's success on everyone else, you people will be crying about this till the very end until the day when the Wii and 360 discontinue production for the next gen well ahead in sales of the PS3 and you'll be all happy because the PS3 will be forced to live on another seven years increasing its sales figures ever so slightly more. Pathetic.

And what's worse, when the majority of people here don't cowtow to your minority views you accuse the site of being Nintendo Biased and the Mods of being Nintendo Biased. You're just trolls you can't accept the fact you've lost and now have got to try and create a fantasy world by convincing others it will be alright too because the more people you can get to believe it, the easier it will be for you to believe.

ok people comparing the PS2 with the PS3 starts need to look at a few things:

first, for last gen consoles, Others are not included in those charts. Secondly, PS2 launched in Japan only and is only slightly behind PS3 current worldwide. There is this myth that the PS2 started off slowly but built up steam to be number 1. This is a complete lie. The PS2 started incredibly out the gate and already had a huge head start before its biggest competition was out (The DC was essentially dead)

Here are some interesting charts:

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS2&reg2=Japan&cons3=PS3&reg3=Japan&align=1

despite the Wii's phenomenal success in Japan, it still hasn't managed to track ahead of the PS2. That's how incredible the PS2 launch was. Of course, the Wii is still supply constrained, and I have no idea how supply constrained the PS2 launch period was, but hopefully this should put to rest the myth that the PS2 launched slowly. You can see the PS3 down there, less than a third of the total of the PS2.

http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=Japan&cons2=PS2&reg2=Japan&cons3=PS3&reg3=Japan&align=1

Same story in USA. Note that despite PS2's supposed "slow start", it's selling almost as good as Wii. in this case, the Wii is ahead mainly because Nintendo is providing the bulk of its production to USA. Also the PS3 had a better start here but has once again dipped to about half the total of the PS2.

I'd show for others as well, but there is no PS2 data. I'm sure the story would be similar, not quite as pronounced though, since there was such a huge allocation of PS3s at launch.

hopefully this dispels some myths about the PS2 launch, interesting they've lasted so long since the numbers are right here on this site.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

Was the PS2 really 300 US Dollars when it was launched? I paid 1250 Dutch Guilders for it when it came out. Thats around 600 US Dollar! And that was the standard retail price here in the Netherlands/EU.

So for me the PS3 was just as expensive as the PS2.

And I get alot more than I got with the PS2. HD, BR, Online, Streaming (DIVX/XVID/MP3's/everything) from my PC.
