Sony - PS2-PS3=same story - View Post

ok people comparing the PS2 with the PS3 starts need to look at a few things:

first, for last gen consoles, Others are not included in those charts. Secondly, PS2 launched in Japan only and is only slightly behind PS3 current worldwide. There is this myth that the PS2 started off slowly but built up steam to be number 1. This is a complete lie. The PS2 started incredibly out the gate and already had a huge head start before its biggest competition was out (The DC was essentially dead)

Here are some interesting charts:

despite the Wii's phenomenal success in Japan, it still hasn't managed to track ahead of the PS2. That's how incredible the PS2 launch was. Of course, the Wii is still supply constrained, and I have no idea how supply constrained the PS2 launch period was, but hopefully this should put to rest the myth that the PS2 launched slowly. You can see the PS3 down there, less than a third of the total of the PS2.

Same story in USA. Note that despite PS2's supposed "slow start", it's selling almost as good as Wii. in this case, the Wii is ahead mainly because Nintendo is providing the bulk of its production to USA. Also the PS3 had a better start here but has once again dipped to about half the total of the PS2.

I'd show for others as well, but there is no PS2 data. I'm sure the story would be similar, not quite as pronounced though, since there was such a huge allocation of PS3s at launch.

hopefully this dispels some myths about the PS2 launch, interesting they've lasted so long since the numbers are right here on this site.
