Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Just asking, how many percent of the population likes the Wii anyway?

That is hard to say, over here it seems like a rather obscure item to the general populace but other parts of the world are nuts about it, so it really is impossible to determine.

Just to show that 50 million was really Ninty's plan:

Nintendo expects to sell 25 million Wii consoles in the next 12 months, company executives say.

If the forecasts are correct this would represent a doubling of the Wii user base to 50 million by spring 2009.

Almost 25 million Wii consoles were shipped in the first 18 months after its launch in November 2006. The company shipped 18.6 million Wii consoles during the past year.

The unprecedented success of the low-cost console drove a 50 per cent rise in annual net profits at Nintendo to $2.5bn on sales of $16.2bn. These figures, and Nintendo's sales data, are for the Japanese financial year which ended 31 March.

"Nintendo's strategy is to accelerate the current sales momentum from 'must-have for every family' to 'must-have for everyone'," the company said in a financial release.

The company will achieve this by "continuously introducing new and unique software, and new services which take advantage of its expanded installed base" .

Nintendo's older DS games system is also still selling well, with 30.3 million shipped last year and a forecast of a slight decline to 28 million shipments during the current financial year.

Nintendo's many parts suppliers and manufacturing partners around the world also stand to benefit if Wii shipments ramp up.

Earnings at Mitsumi Electric and Hosiden, which sell parts to, and undertake assembly work for, Nintendo, receive a greater boost from the Wii than the Nintendo DS.

"We think that Nintendo's projections look like good news for these two companies," said Takami Kono of Nomura Securities.

Pancakes? :p Don't you mean hot cakes? :p Ah well. Anyway, I'm sure there's a LARGE percentage of people who like or are at least interested in Wii. Just take a look at the sales numbers and the demand.

Well, with around 120 millions PS2 in the world, Wii still had margin to expand een more

Especially if you consider it appeals to a wider audience...

US: about 5~8%
Others: about 2% (This is not including China or India or any country the Wii isn't available in yet.)
Japan: around 16%

Someone already posted many of the groups the Wii attracts.

But remember Nintendo still has a way to go as far as marketing the Wii - so far they have said they are aiming for women which is true but now they are going to invert things a little, who they gun for next could up the appeal of the system without changing anything about the syste.

Truely innovative business with in this Industry. But I read somewhere that the DS is in 1 in every 8 house holds in Japan so they have a long way to go before 'everyone' can find video gaming to be a healthy hobby.
