Forums - Gaming - When will we get 1080P as a standard?

It seems to me that this won't happen until the next generation mainly because games are becoming so complex and people are wanting so much more from games.  Seems MS was right way back sayin that 720P would be the sweet spot for gaming at least for this generation.  With the 360/ps3 being able to upscale to 1080P why bother developing a game in native 1080P. This way you can focus on gameplay and adding more features like 4 player co-op with a good framerate.  I rather have all that processing power of the 360/ps3 be spent on giving a kick ass world environment or AI then seeing extra pixels on screen.  Yes I know people will bring up the example of Grand Turismo and other PSN/XBLA games that are 1080P but those games do not have the scale of games like metal gear solid, grand theft auto, or quite frankly any of those huge open world games that have so many things happening at once.  So does anyone else think we will have 1080P as standard anytime soon or like me do you expect it next generation?

It will probably be easily reachable next generation, however, I expect 2 generations to pass before 1080p becomes the standard.

Right now, 720p/1080i are where the market is heading. 1080p tvs are to expensive for your average consumer, and until they drop in price, the adoption rate will remain low. Also, one of the major reason for buying a HD tv is because it is flat, not because it is HD. Nintendo will probably move to 720p next generation, and if Sony and Microsoft push the hardware to actually support 1080p, they run the risk of repeating what they did this generation. Putting the price range above the average consumers means.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Nah, it's not standard for all PC games at all. There are really no real standards on the PC at all. Try to run Crysis in an equivalent of 1080p on the PC on hardware from 2 generations ago.

Sony claimed games to support resolutions "up to 1080p", which implied it won't be standard / mandatory. We already know Microsoft was wrong with regard to claiming you can't have a performing game in 1080p on the PS3. Super Stardust HD and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue (both rendering in 1080p @ 60 FPS) are two of the PS3's most impressive and solidly performing PS3 games currently available and it's still early days with for example Housemarque anticipating to be able to get 50% more graphics perfomance out of their next PS3 game while there's still a big amount of untapped SPE potential to tap into (the game does over 20,000 super fast moving colliding physics based objects on screen at once as well as a over a hundred thousand particle effects).

I believe GT5P only runs in 1080P during replays.

No, the difference is that during replays the framerate goes to solid 30 FPS this for the added effects.

No way it's standard, my monitor only goes up to 1024p max. Even many currently sold PCs would crawl to run Crysis in such a resolution.
