It will probably be easily reachable next generation, however, I expect 2 generations to pass before 1080p becomes the standard.
Right now, 720p/1080i are where the market is heading. 1080p tvs are to expensive for your average consumer, and until they drop in price, the adoption rate will remain low. Also, one of the major reason for buying a HD tv is because it is flat, not because it is HD. Nintendo will probably move to 720p next generation, and if Sony and Microsoft push the hardware to actually support 1080p, they run the risk of repeating what they did this generation.
